How to Reduce Car Road Noise?

Hi,

Are there any options to reduce the car road noise for camry 1998?
Would the tires be options to consider?

Thanks you very much for your time/

Dynamat your doors, and under the floor carpet...also depending on the tires you get this too could reduce it...but sometimes that comes w/ quality of the tire too...

tires are a big part. wind resistance is another. are all of your plastic covers under the front bumper in place? anything else sticking out more than it should? body planels lined up correctly?

There was noticeable noise increase when I went from michelin's to hankooks.. but i really think tire noise depends on tire model, not company by which it was made. before taking time to dynamat, i'd first check where the road noise is coming from. if it's constant wind noise, then check and make sure all your panels are properly in place. if its constant rumbling noise, it's probably your tires.. also check to make sure your alignment is spot on cause that can create noise also. the last resort i'd say is dynamat because that's covering up the noise instead of eliminating it.

Camry normally does pretty well on road isolation. Here are a few questions on the car and condition:

  1. What tires are you running? "Open" tread design like snow tires or aggressive mud&snow designs are noisier than normal.
  2. What kind of roads are you driving on? Macadam, concrete, smooth asphalt, or dirt? Noise level correlated to road surface?
  3. What kind of miles on the car? Bushings age and the rubber deteriorates, and an 'experienced' car will feel really 'old and clunky' because the bushings are worn. Fix isn't that expensive.
  4. Are the struts and mounts original, OEM replacements, or aftermarket replacements? Hard suspension mounts transmit more noise - and some 'performance' struts and mounts are 'hard'.
Sound suppressors like Dynamat are effective (up to a point), but won't really do that much if the car suspension is worn or has been 'mucked up'.

Tires do make a big difference. You can check tirerack.com for reviews about noise levels (however they list only the Harmony and HydroEdge for the 98 4-cyl).

Go with Michelin next time. Looks like all their MS tires, Harmony, Destiny, and X Radial carry the 80,000 mile warranty, which means the 20-25K mile tires like Bridgestones are actually more expensive than Michelins.

Other add-on sound control methods include:
