1997 Toyota Camry LE ticking sound when speeding up or hard acceleration

Hi All, I have 1997 Toyota Camry and when ever there is hard acceleration or when I press the speed pedal hard the car gives a ticking noise repetitively. Could you tell me what the problem is? or if it is normal?

my mothers car did the same thing - it turned out to be her lower bearing...(at 172k)

could also be a belt

Thanks for the reply, the belts were recently replaced, but do you how much it is to replace the bearing for this car?

When you do the bearing you normally rebuild the whole engine. It could be the adjusting shims are becoming worn from high mileage and are making the valves noisy. And is it a tick or a knock it can be diagnosed better with a video.

incorrect. It really depends.

If you diy it, you could do it for cheap. I found a wrecked camry at iaai.com for 1300 with 110k on it - I swapped the engine and trans, and have been selling the spare parts here - as of now, after selling about half of the parts, we're at 800bucks. I figure when it's all said and done, we'll have spent about 400 for the engine and trans. Not expensive at all.

You have options depending on your comfort level.

Before you panic yourself about it, have a professional look at it. Should be a relatively inexpensive diagnosis.

You could also be describing the engine pinging. Are you familiar with what pinging sounds like? It is sometimes described as similiar to marbles rolling around in a tin can. How many miles are on this car?

Definitely sounds like pinging/pre-ignition.

my 95 does the same exact thing. Right around 2,500 or 3,000 rpm. I believe the problem is something to do with the clutch packs or internal on transmission. If I let off the gas pedal, and press the gas pedal again (going to exact same RPM) the problem stops

It is not supposed to do that though

I do have a slight exhaust valve tap, but the valves need adjusted.
