3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
The Toyota Manual says that the v6 should run on 91 octane. Does anybody actually do this or do they run it at 87. Is it possible to get the same from just adding a octance booster? I have been putting 87 in it for ever but I just found out that toyota says use 91.
High-test about 30% more expensive than regular. Do you get 30% more performance?
In the winter, its usually cool enough where you won't have any pinging/detonation issues, and won't benefit from higher octane.
Owner's manual is written by morons. These same morons caused sludge monsters and disposable vehicles. Don't bother quoting the manual. Its not the Bible or Koran.

30%?? Where does that figure come from?? I dunno where you get your gas from... Assuming 20 cents difference, which is not unusual in my area, 3.00$ a gallon for regular, which I'm betting is near the national average right now:
0.20$ / 3.00$ = 0.066667 x 100 = + 6.667 % a gallon
Let's assume 5 BHP (which is a number I take from ASG14) increase for what I would assume is a Gen 4 1MZ since manual says 91 required, rated at 200 BHP I think, I'm too lazy to look up, percent change:
(5 BHP / 200 BHP) x 100 = + 2.5 % in BHP
EDIT: And that thread is on 91 octane, I fill up 93, numbers may be different and/or higher!
If I were to use the HP number from this thread, more specifically, post 16, which assumes 20 HP increase over 172 BHP for the Camry:
(20 BHP / 172 BHP) x 100 = +11.6 % in BHP
Reality is somewhere in between, probably in the viscinity of +5-6% in BHP I'd assume - about the same as the price increase. It's your call, and ultimately, your money

Sorry, typo. I can type faster than I can think, and these re-sewn fingers go where they want. Typically I'm at a pace too quick to proofread.
Around here, its 30¢which is 10% around here... $3 for reg and 3.30 for super.

It's all good I guess my point was that the price increase figure is so close to power increase figure that, ultimately, it depends on your budget. Based on my experience with my 1MZ and my mom's '98 Avy, the earlier 1MZ's recommend premium, whereas later ones require it. I guess they made the timing map even more agressive when they increased the power, if that was humanly possible

Is it "recommended" or "required"? I thought you should be able to run on 87 without problems. Maybe on the OBD-II scanner you'll see +2% extra fuel trim per grade of gas as a member reported.

91RON = 87 octane or there abouts. but regular gas makes every car i pass by sound like the engine is falling apart. 93 octane is worth the price.
