good price for timing belt/water pump replacement?

after reading the timing belt/water pump replacement DIY threads im not sure im up to tackling this job. been calling around and a local toyota specialist quoted me a price of $650 to replace:

- timing belt
- cam/crank seals
- water pump
- tensioner/idler pully

all OEM parts. sound reasonable? should i get the oil pump done at the same time? anything else? thx-

should cost a shop anywhere between $250.00 - $750.00. So you are correct in that. It's about a 4-5 hr job.

4-5 hr at $90.00/hr = $360.00 - $450.00

Thats assuming that the dealer is charging $90.00 / hr. Most dealers are $100.00 / hr or more

I wouldn't replace the oil pump until you've done an oil pressure test, or checked the gap between the driven and drive rotors inside the pump

And if you get the pump replaced, you will need an oil pan gasket, and exhaust manifold gasket(s)

Make sure they replace the thermostat as well. And ask for all the old parts back, both for curiosity and to make sure they actually replace them.

$650 is a hilarious price.

At a indy mechanic labor should be no more than 200$ + 150$ for parts. Its a reallly easy job on the 2.2.

at the Toyota Dealer, they had a timing belt package, which included all belts (not just the timing belt) new water pump, and new seals. The grand total was $998.35 that included parts, labor, and taxs...

agree - it's the kind of job that if, even if you've never done one before, it's not that bad.

do i really need to replace the cam/crank seals if they're not leaking? not replacing those would make the job much more tempting for me to tackle.

I would change them when you have things apart. I use Fel-Pro seals.

Thats what I did and now their seeping a bit only 15k miles later. But the way I look at it itll be easier the second time around, especially since now that ive done the seals on another camry.

The crank seal is really easy. The oil pump isnt to bad, you might need a new rotor since it wears a hairthin groove in itself. Camshaft is sorta trick since you need to remove the cam pulley.

You need a air gun as well, itll save you so much thinking vs trying to take it out with some stone age method.
