CV Boot Replacement?

I have a 92 Camry 4cyl. While replacing brake pads, i noticed my drivers side cv boot was split in half. Are there any step by step guides to replacing the boot? Any pictures? Also how much of a pain is it to do and how long does it usually take? any help/tips would be great, thanks!! Is it safe to drive while before I replace the boot?

4th Generation

There is a go by in the DIY section of this forum. It covers a 96 Camry by Ghettosled. Here is the link to it though. Bunch of other good DIY's you should read up on. Lots of good info there.

Dave

this is a "how to" on replacing the passenger's side CV boots (warning- many photos)

No amount of time is good to drive once the boot is torn. Dirt gets in and the grease slings out. The joint's time is limited. You might find it's easier to just put in a rebuilt axle. They aren't terribly expensive.

First check to see if the cv joint is clicking by making tight turns in an empty parking lot. If you hear clicking then you have to get rebuilt or new halfshafts.

Rebuilt of OEM halfshafts and new aftermarket ones now carry lifetime warranty. So take your pick. Some prefer dealer parts, that's fine too, but those do not carry lifetime warranty.

As far as rebuilding your halfshaft it does take time to carefully clean the needle bearings and put everything back. Autozone should have the special clamp pliers in their free loaner tool program. I would disassemble the outer joint, but that takes a puller or brass hammer. And you need to torque the axle nut to spec or risk damaging the wheel bearing later.

Here's some videos on replacing the whole cv axle. That should give you plenty of info.

IMPORTANT:
Toyota DOES NOT rebuild their own parts. So a rebuilt OEM part isn't exactly up to Toyota qualitly. And carsus axles suck. Along with other aftermarket axles. IMO, this isn't a job you want to do every time an axle fails. So PLEASEEE just spend the extra money and buy NEW OEM cv axles.

I'd still recommend getting a 1/2"-drive 250 lb/ft torque wrench ~$79 Home Depot. Sockets on free loaner program at Autozone. Torque the axle nut before lowering the corner.

Also, watch for Black Friday tool deals at Sears.
