cost of timing belt replacement

I've got 100,000 miles on my second timing belt (95 wagon v-6, 175,000 miles). I'm used to paying in the $500-$600 range for having the belt and water pump replaced. Now my mechanic says is may run me as high as $800-$900, if he needs to do seals, tensioner, and something about the oil pump, I believe. I'm used to high auto repair prices in my area (Mass.), but this seems excessive. I trust my mechanic, but.....

If you could do the job yourself you could save some coin. Anyway, the extra cost for seals, tensioner, etc. is not that much. It would be a little more in labor cost though. The price seems a bit high, sounds like what a dealer would charge.

If he did: 4 oil seals, 2 pulleys, water pump, 3 belts, t-belt cover gaskets(3), thermostat, and coolant, and a pcv valve (so ya dont blow out those new seals) thats about what I got quoted. I decided to do it my self, just two days ago, It will take you two days your first time. there is an amazing DIY thread here, take your time, its not really that bad. I saved over $500, maybe $600. Mine 97 had 102k and the oil pump seals were leaking, they were hard as a rock!

Dude...I live 15 mins North of Boston. I would do it all for 500 even if you made the drive...about 350 if you bring your own parts...and that would be T-Belt, Water Pump, Oil Pump Seal, and tensioner and pulley.....let me know

Edit: and I will teach you how to do it if you wanted...
