3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have built a turbo kit for a Mustang before so I am thinking of building a small turbo kit for my 93 4 cyl Camry. I have a spare motor and can use that as a mock up, at first I was thinking of just building a new tubular header and then though why not put a small turbo on it as well. Just wondering how much HP the stock injectors can support? I don't want to go crazy HP, just a few extra HP for some get up and go. Also what do you guys do for tuning these cars with modifications? I know with minor mods no tuning is needed, the stock computer can compensate, which is the main reason I only want a small turbo.
Search. This has been covered time and time again.
Hey iovaykind, have you seen this post?

For new members to TN, please make sure to use the forum's search feature to see if your issue has been covered in a past thread, chances are extremely good it has. If you can't find an answer then post a new thread. Also, please take the time to review the sticky threads at the top of the forum pages, which are full of information and links to help you out and also can often answer your questions.
For forum veterans, please make an effort to go "that extra mile" to help out a noob. If anyone posts a thread that you find irritating, then don't post a reply and just move on to the next thread and let a moderator help out the noob. Posting smart aleck replies helps no one, and only irritates or alienates noobs, other forum members, and moderators alike. Treat other forum members with due respect, or infractions and temporary bans will follow. Thanks.
its cool, I sometimes forget what its like to be a noob since I am a long time member on other sites. I found quite a few good articles on the topic now, thanks guys.
If you have an automatic 4cyl, don't even bother with the build. The auto CAN NOT handle any extra power.

the auto tranny is that weak it can't handle even a little extra HP, I am talking a very mild turbo, mainly for the fun of building it, not really for the power, just a little extra few HP.
I found it easy enough to kill my auto trans with it's normal amount of power.
ok, it's not quite dead really, but second gear for some reason has a lot less power after my abuse. It's a good thing that I have a 5spd to swap in
edit: I think it was that I always stomped on it @ 30mph so it would shift down into the top of second. In the winter it would spin the tires until about 30mph (wheel speed) then grip and shift down, that probably didn't help much either come to think of it.
second edit: get a 5spd, much more useful and noticeable mod than a turbo on an auto.
Ehhhh, i suppose it could. I'd HIGHLY recommended getting a V6 camry or swapping in a 5-speed though.

pretty much what he said. if you get a v6, u'd have the extra hp but you wouldn't botherin doin a turbo setup on that.
if you wanted to do the turbo just so you can spend some money and do something different, then you should get the 5 speed and then turbo the 4cyl.
so pretty much depends on if ur main goal is the hp (just buy a v6) or if your main goal is to spend some money and work on a project (get a 5 spd and turbo ur i4)
I have to agree that the automatic will not handle any extra power. They are weak enough with a bone stock car. Start with a 5-speed car or swap and go from there.
hey bro how much does that turbo costs bcuz i got a 95 camry 4cyl and im really looking for one
If it's an automatic it costs whatever PLUS a 5 speed swap.
