J1850 VPW Protocal for 96 Camry

Can anyone verify that the 96 Camry uses the J1850 VPW ( Variable Pulse Width) OBD2 protocol ? It is tough to find this on the web for some reason.

As a rule of thumb, GM cars and light trucks use SAE J1850 VPW (Variable Pulse Width Modulation). Chrysler products and all European and most Asian imports use ISO 9141 circuitry. Fords use SAE J1850 PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) communication patterns.

On 1996 and later vehicles, you can tell which protocol is used by examining the OBD II connector:
J1850 VPW--The connector should have metallic contacts in pins 2, 4, 5, and 16, but not 10.
ISO 9141-2--The connector should have metallic contacts in pins 4, 5, 7, 15, and 16.
J1850 PWM--The connector should have metallic contacts in pins 2, 4, 5, 10, and 16.

The guy at obd2-2.com says that the 1996 Camry is an exception to the rule of thumb. He tells me that it uses the J1850 VPW protocol.

The only thing I can find on my own is that the 1996 Corolla and 1996 Tacoma use the J1850 VPW.

I found this in a Gen 3 Camry manual, but I can't say for sure if it applies to your specific 1996 model.

Thanks AjKalian. This is great. It looks like the ECM communicates using the J1850 VPW Protocol. And the physical connector ( or plug ) is the SAE J1962 connector.
