94 Camry heater help

I have a 94 Camry 5sfe. The heat does not work very well. I recently replaced the thermostat becuase the old one was stuck open. Now the temp gauge comes right up to about half way after about 2 or 3 minutes. But when I put the heat on, it comes out hot, then immediately starts to cool. I have a 30 minute ride to work and I don't have good heat until 15 or 20 minutes into my trip. Any suggestions on what to look for? Thanks in advance.

sounds like you have air in your system or an incorrectly installed / faulty thermostat.

Try (when the car is cool) to check the fluid. When you take the cap off squeeze both hoses lightly and watch for air bubbles to gurgle up. Top of as necessary.

Your Heater controls are purely mechanical .. When you turn the knob to HOT (red) it opens a valve inside the heater hose and it lets coolant circulate through the system.

Mister P, I took the cap off and gave both hoses a couple of squeezes. I spilled some coolant out and didn't actually see any bubbles, but I'm guessing there was some air trapped in the system. I put the cap back on, started it up and after it was up to temp, the heat worked fine. Thanks for the tip.

hey hey

Glad you figured the problem out!

These cars can be a headache because they have no bleeder valves for the coolant system
