3rd Generation OBD1 Aggravation

Hey guys, I'm kind of stumped on this.

I changed out the transmission on that XLE, got it all hooked up had a problem with rough idle so I pulled the throttle body changed the IAC out with an extra i had. Started it up and it idles real good. Thats all fine and dandy. (keep in mind once warm it ran great. Shifted great, etc..)

Started driving it yesterday and noticed it started shifting really hard and wouldnt downshift. I would get up to 45mph or 50mph and apply the brakes and the rpms go really low (almost stalls). If I physically shift it into 2nd and 1st it shifts. For some reason its going into Limp mode staying in 3rd gear.

I connected the DLC and checked for codes.. I got code 41 which is TPS Signal. Prior to this i disconnected the TPS while diagnosing the idle problem thinking that may be linked to it, so i think the code came up because of that. Regardless, I changed out the TPS this morning with a known good one too. Problem still persists. There is no Transmission codes anymore. The overdrive light continuously flashes indicating that there is no problem with the DLC connected.

The transmission I installed in there was sitting for 7 years, and I didnt change out the Shift solenoids and filter upon re-installation.

The kicker is that it was shifting great and downshifting prior to removing the Throttle body to repair the IAC. I know that the VSV and the TPS are typically linked to the shifting aspect of the transmission through the computer, but I dont think that the VSV could just "Go bad" all of a sudden.

The transmission fluid is correct, there are no leaks either.

I also had a suspicion that I may have had a problem with the kickdown cable since I removed both cables from the TB. Seems to be in working order. The Drive light doesn't come on in the cabin of the camry, but the bulb is bad and thats why. All the other lights show up now that I put the new NSS in there.

Sorry for all this text , but more information helps people diagnose a problem

And for those who dont know what vehicle it is :

Year : 1992
Make : Toyota
Model : Camry XLE
Motor : 5sfe
Transmission : A140E (Pre-94 -- two speed sensor model)

Any ideas guys??

EDIT:

Also, the transmission is not slipping .. forgot to add that in there.

I have a suspicion that the valve body or Shift Solenoids are clogged, but not completely positive.

Bump for anyone with any information

Its just really annoying because OBD1 sucks extremely bad because it doesn't show as many codes as obdII. I am going to be doing a transmission solenoid voltage test Tuesday or Wednesday but I would like it if someone could chime in with some suggestions while im workin on that

Took it on a drive, When stopping from 40+ mph i just noticed it does downshift but the RPMS are right around 50-100rpm and it shakes really bad. Then it downshifts. Do you guys think that its a solenoid problem?

I'm not sure if the 5s-fe supports this or not but... OBDI DIAG 2. It may help you out. Sadly, I have no idea how to work DIAG 2. Toysrme wrote this article... but he isn't around much anymore.

Afraid you'll miss OBD-II's anal retentiveness for troubleshooting?
The 3vz-fe has you covered. Tho the '94 1mz-fe had the world's first complaint engine/ECU, the 3vz-fe's do have an ace up their sleeve.
Diagnostic mode II. Yes... The 3vz-fe is the only v6, and one of two OBD-II Toyota's with DIAG2! This can't even be entered with the ECU OFF! It has to be done with the engine running! It will throw every code possible instantly. Guess what happens when you trigger it & you're not moving more than 6mph? Yep, wheel speed sensor code. All your temp & o2 sensors haven't warmed up? Ya - count all them too. Along with a half dozen other codes.
Anything triggers anything in DIAG2.

well my scan tool has OBD1 capabilities, but I dont know if its going to show anything .

No CEL anymore since I changed the TPS and reset the codes. I am going to be checking voltage on the DLC under the dash while driving. Hopefully there will be a problem with the solenoid voltage or a short in the solenoid harness so its easy to fix. lol. This XLE is becoming a pita

I do like the fact that OBDII is more in-depth, but it is nice that OBDI doesn't trigger as many CEL's .. it just makes it 100x harder to narrow a problem down

Question.

Does anyone know if the Shift Solenoids between the two transmissions is the same?

Answer. They are

================

I have a suspicion that one of the solenoids are stuck. More than likely its going to be the Shift Lock Solenoid.

update:

Checked the resistance on the SL Solenoid and it was 12.5Ohm. FSM indicates 11-14ohm so thats within spec. I tried to apply 12V+ to the solenoid to hear it function and didnt hear anything. **Scratches head** lol
