Question '98 Camry CE Power Window Problem

Hello everyone

A new comer to this site so I hope I am putting this in the right place. :-)

I have a 1998 Toyota Camry CE with 129000 KMs on it. The car has all the standard features plus an after-market auto remote starter/alarm that was on it when I bought it 5 months ago.

A couple of weeks ago, i put the passenger window down (from the driver side) but could not put it back up. It would go down but not up. I thought it's the alarm messing the electrical system and turned it off and on a few times and eventually I was able to put it back up. Not sure if it was a coincidence.

A few days later, my wife (this time from the passenger side) put the window down and the same problem came back. I ended up unplugging the battery and resetting it to be able to put it back up.

I took it to my mechanic but once I got there, the problem fixed itself. He couldn't find anything so I did my oil change and came back. On the way back, I tested it and noticed that the same thing happens. I went back and he tested it and again it worked perfectly fine. Here, I must add it has nothing to do with the car being idle or running or in drive.

He said it's probably the switch under the buttons on the driver side that has to be changed. I believe he said a "relay switch".

Right now, the passenger side button only puts the window down but not up. The driver side does nothing; niether up nor down.

I wanted to get your input on this, if anyone know.

TIA

He's right. Most of the time when the window malfunction it's usually the switch under the buttons. Not sure if it's called a relay switch however. A visit to the junk yard will solve this problem without paying a premium at the dealer.

Thanks! He indicated that the price is $150 but he will order a used one for $50 which suits me fine. I hope this fixes it.

Thanks!

hmmm.....sounds like this actually has nothing to do w/ the actual switches, but a relay within the system.....

hence the fact that you can unplug your battery for a while and it'll "reset" and work again....

but take a look at the actual part that your mech orders and tell us what if it was a part that he installs in the actual switch box or not....just curious...

Smile Power Window Problem Resolved

Hi

The mechanic disassembled the unit but ended up not putting the new switch (relay switch I believe it is). He mentioned that there was some corrusion due to water or other liquid seepage. He cleaned the corrusion off the switch and put it back in. It's been okay since then.

Thanks!
