3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
There is a local guy selling a 1992 Camry sedan on CL with a 5-speed manual transmission who claims the transmission is going out of it. I have been around cars a long time and this seems kind of bunk to me unless he means the clutch is going. Is there really anything else on these cars that that can break/go out on a manual transmission? If not the car is beat and I was going to try to buy it to use as an organ donor for my 5-speed wagon swap since the auto is gone in my wagon.
Prob just the clutch needs to be replaced....although I did see a cam out here that had probs shifting into 4th gear...could be the actual gears...or syncros....i would ask better questions...and find out what exactly is happening....then you will be able to decide for yourself...

Watch out for the build thread!!!
IM BAAAAAACK!!!!!!!
It's just labeled that way. They don't make (in my searching at least) a rebuild kit for the camry. In fact, everyone I had called said "they have 5 speed camry's?!"
Well the clutch and throwout bearing is what I'm thinking he means, but I emailed him to find out for sure. I intend to use a new clutch kit anyway which will replace the throwout bearing, disc, and pressure plate. Once I find out for sure I will keep you guys posted.

I seriously got the same response this morning at the boneyard when I went to price parts to try to assemble a swap kit.
It's easiest to just give the transmission code instead of telling them the car. Most databases don't include a manual option for the camry, but will have the transmission code listed under Celica, MR2, Corolla, etc.

I know you can purchase a throw out bearing, clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, Input Shaft Seal, Input Shaft, Output Shaft, Output shaft seal at any parts store. I did it on my 93 last year.
If you are looking into actually replacing the Synchros on the gears or the differential bearings. The synchros may be a dealer only item .. (Not positive). The Differential bearings MAY be able to be gotten at the parts store though.. Just get the part No. off them and ask the parts store for a bearing (Whatever numbers they are)
I just called the lady, it slips in all gears!!!!!!! Since I was going to replace the clutch anyway I'm picking it up tonight! Wagon manual swap is happening this weekend!!!!!

I was talking about synchro's and bearing's
Those are available at the dealer for $100-$150 EACH or as a kit (but I don't remember what company..) for about $400 with Nachi/Koyo bearings, seals and synchro's. The S51 uses a real wicked synchro setup for 2nd gear (I think). Its actually two dog teeth and then a retainer. It's a real bitch.
These kinds of parts though I wouldn't want to get from a parts store like AutoZone or Advance...I would want to use OEM parts ONLY.
