3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
i am sorry but..... please discuss manual transmission with me
is it possible for you guys to provide me with some information ? and maybe sticky this information ? i know its been covered many times before but... i dunno. wikipedia wasn't much help. or it would be nice if this info was already out there and someone can direct me to it ?
can we make a table of all the manual trans that works with 1mz-fe and 5s-fe/3s-ge ? because the next time i do a clutch job, i want to pull the tranny and get some new gearing/synchros/lsd in
Transmissions from the factory:
5s-fe 1987-1991 Camry
- s51
First Gear: 3.538:1
Second Gear: 1.960:1
Third Gear: 1.250:1
Fourth Gear: 0.945:1
Fifth Gear: 0.731:1
Final Drive: 3.736:1
5s-fe 1992-1996 Camry
- s51
First Gear: 3.538:1
Second Gear: 1.960:1
Third Gear: 1.250:1
Fourth Gear: 0.945:1
Fifth Gear: 0.731:1
Final Drive: 3.944:1
I like the idea of collecting the tranny info and stickying it.
To my knowledge:

3s-gte 1994-1995 (93 Optional) MR2

(The MR2 E153 Transaxle used a mechanical speed sensor from 1990 until 1992. After 1992, an electric speed sensor was used in its place. Either sensor will fit into any year of the E153 Transaxle.)
edit: I'm not sure which year the LSD was optional for the E153. It may be 92. I'm also seeing conflicting info on when the 2nd gen MR2 existed.... 90-95, 91-95, etc.

also, are the internals on all the e153 (synchros, gears) exchangable with all the other e153 internals from another car ?
All E153 internals are identical no matter which car they're pulled from (of course, with the exception of the MR2 LSD). I think I've also seen MR2 guys run E53 cases with E153 internals, IIRC. Also note that the axles are possibly different in a LSD E153 versus a non-LSD E153.

oh ok cool. somehow i always thought that the internals are different because i read somewhere that the e153 on the 3s-gte mr2 have stronger synchros and also different gear ratios.
also the final drive is because of the differential right ? is the differential part of the fwd trannys ? are they the same between trannies with the same code ? (well besides the one w LSD)
^ That actually would make sense. If you've heard that, you MIGHT want to read up on it. I'm not 100% sure that they're completely identical. I should take back my previous post...
And yes final drive = differential... which is part of a transaxle. Some trannies even share fluid between the diff and tranny portions. I wish I could show you a video of a FWD tranny tear down.

Would the LSD from a E153 fit into an E53, or no? just wondering
Apparently you can use a 3rd gen MR2 (MRS) LSD in the E53. Just something I heard. I DO know that the guts of an E153 fit into the E53 case. And apparently you CAN make hybird E53/153's... I (or you) just need to research it more.

the same for all the generations of the mr2 ?
No idea, honestly. I (or you) should search around on some of the MR2 sites i'm registered on.
Just a rough outline for now. I'll update this as needed.
