3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Another road trip, nearly 700 miles to cover today...all is well until about 8 hours into the trip (at night), I came up on a something in the middle of the road (apparently it was a refrigerator that got hit a couple times) that appeared to be a giant piece of a metal. I had no time to react, clipped it on the passenger side and it cracked the headlight, put a couple of dents and ripped the plastic covering from underneath the car. In addition, the passenger side turn signal wont work and I cant seem to get the little screw off. From what I can tell all of it is stuff thats pretty cheap to get, but I have to take another look and possibly underneath to make sure nothing else got snagged. But I still had like 100 miles or so to go and made it so I dont think it was anything major for the most part. I've ran into signs before
Then...few miles later I see a deer eating on the side of the road
So yeah, just be careful. I just wonder why they haven't passed any laws stopping people from carrying furniture and sh*t in the back of their trucks. I can count on 4 different occasions where couches, chairs and all sorts of crap have been in the road and I missed it by a hair. Its bad enough my car is beat up as it is!

there was once a long cement curb in the middle of the road. i bottomed out on it. i still don't know what damange it caused. heard some really loud noises. hope it didn't catch on my exhaust and rip up/bend the flex pipe/headers
I once had a refrigerator box, I don't know if there was a fridge in it or not, come off the top of an rv in front of me on an interstate bridge. That was fun, there was a dump truck in front of me between me and the rv. The dump truck driver locked up the wheels and drifted into the next lane (mad truck driving skills). I was like Ohh ShIz, something is going down when I saw him lock the wheels. It wasn't until he changed lanes that I saw the box there, it's a really good thing that my Camry has awesome braking ability because I was blocked from merging. I'm not sure who sees a loaded dump truck lock it's wheels and thinks, well now seams like a good time to pass.
The moral of the story, be careful out there, those Ice boxes are out for blood!
Glad to hear that it's only minor damage this time!
Hauling stuff isn't that bad if you tie it down correctly. When I had my 97 dodge ram and my 87 dodge ram and I was hauling crap I always used a couple ratchet straps if I was hauling something like a fridge.
Carelessness is the #1 cause of loosing a load.
Good thing you didnt hit it head on and deploy your airbags or something! Glad your alright bud, sounds like you should be able to repair it pretty easy
I've never seen anything weird on the parkways or streets like you guys...worst thing was a run over grey squirrel lol.
Although, a bit off topic, one thing I hate about parking are those yellow blocks...I have a hard time judging if I go too far in and scratch the underside of my car's bumper >_>
Once the pickup truck in front of me dropped it's 20 ft extension ladder. I slammed the brakes and swerved into the grass and hit it sideways. Everyone behind me stopped for me though! But yeah, I pulled over and yelled at the guy (since he stopped to pick up the ladder).
How are you going to hang a ladder more than half way out the bed of a truck without tying it down...
When I was young and was a passenger in my Father's 1979 Corona 2-door 18R-G, we were on a mountain pass. We overtook a dump truck on the downhill on the straightaway. It seemed like an ordinary encounter. 10 mins after overtaking, on the hairpins after the straightaway, and still on the downhill, we heard a loud bang from above. We looked everywhere and in just a few seconds, the dump truck landed 100 meters in front of the car. I believe the driver was dead because the truck landed on the driver's side. The truck might have lost control on one of the hairpins.

last year i hit a sofa on the freeway. i was going 65 mph in my F150. it fell off the truck in front of me. apparently that dumbass didnt think it was necessary to tie it down. it splintered into a million pieces. Did almost no damage, just pushed a piece of plastic back. glad i wasnt in the camry.

Lucky the truck didn't land on you.
I have encounter many crap falling onto the road. A metal rake from a truck, mattress, sofa, and a while ago, there was an accident on front of me and I was able to dodge everything but a bumber cover.
The good news is all seems well. I replaced my shiny clear AM headlight with a foggy old Toyota Headlight from the wrecker. Also just needed the long black plastic piece covering the wheel area. Apparently the impact simply blew out the turn signal bulb which was assebily once I removed the headlight. It also yanked the 2 headlight bulbs out of socket, meaning I could have just kept my shiny clear AM bulb even though it was shattered.
But, learned something new today. I seen a Camry in the junkyard with only 166,000 miles on it, thinking to myself it died pre-maturely. Mines at 208,000 and drives like a charm. Not bragging, but I was actually happy to see a camry with less mileage than mine...meaning if something does go bad, I can just snag it from the junkyard LOL.
However, everyone wants me to get a new car because mine is so dented and banged up...its almost embarassing to be seen with. But hey, it got me from Las Vegas to Florida... so I really dont think people should be worried about what Im driving. Sometimes, I really dont understand why people feel the need to get rid of perfectly good cars just because of body damage. This car looked better on the outside at 130,000...but was neglected under the hood. Now its pristine under the hood, but wrecked on the outside LOL

I was stopped behind a pickup with no rear gate for the bed of his truck and it was loaded with stuff. I couldn't tell what any of it was except for the two tires. Sitting there, I was thinking I'm surprised all that stuff hasn't fallen out yet.. maybe it froze or something. Looks kinda dirty. Maybe it's just wet and weighted. The light turns green and he starts to go, so I start to go.. and shit comes flying out of the bed of his truck. Looks like rotors, flywheels, bunch of junk yard shit, basically.. I had to brake and swerve to avoid it all.. surely the people behind me were confused.. then he accelerated again and MORE shit came flying out, and it looked like they were round, spiked objects.. had to dodge that too for fear of losing a tire. I got over to the other lane as soon as I could.. I honestly should have followed him and called the cops about it but I was just off work and wanted to get home. Too late now. I'm still curious what all that was there for, and how he didn't hear that shit hitting the road as it fell out of his truck? =\
