If you're removing the balance shafts, it will not make any difference if the crank has that gear or not.

Even if you do get another crank, it will have that gear. Then you'll have to pay to get it machined off. You'll be paying a small fortune to shed ~3-4lbs. Not worth it. The money would be better spent on a fully balanced rotating assembly, and port & polish work.

If you get a crankshaft from an MR2 or Celica 5sfe it will not have that gear and I see no reason why it wouldn't fit. Your only big worry with removing the balance shafts is to plug the holes so you maintain oil pressure.

Hmm. I forgot about those. Still to pay that much for such little weight savings...not worth it IMHO. If the original crank is still within spec, I'd reuse it, and put money into other things that will actually do something for performance.

If anything, you should be getting the balance shaft removed because they are prone to breaking; they shouldn't be removed for weight reduction...

The gears are actually pressed on, so if you're worried about a lb or two you can get it pressed off. I just kept mine but removed the balance shaft assembly.

The actual ring of teeth is heated up then slides on, when it cools down it contracts and clamps itself onto the crank. It's replaced by heating it back up and sliding it off, just like you do with piston pins, only it fits more tight. I wouldn't bother with it though, it's not worth putting a torch to your crank and messing up the temperament of the metal, the actual teeth weigh next to nothing, You could then have the rest of the gear machined down once the teeth are off though, but either way it's not really worth it.

If you get a crank with the balance gear removed, or have the balancer removed by your machinist have the machinist balance the crankshaft before installing it. Unbalanced you will see a lot of vibration at low rpm.

ofcourse im gonna get forged rods and pistons and either redue the crank and or get a new one and balance it and match the weight of the rods and pistons. alot of work that i want to be done right.

Well the crank work isn't where your going to spend the money.. the connecting rods and pistons are gonna cost you an arm and a leg.. Machine work is only going to run you like $200.00 to get it honed, balanced, and aligned
