OEM wagon roof rack sturdiness?

How many have mounted bike and or ski racks directly to the stock cross bars on a camry wagon? I am between buying crossbars to mount to the side bars of the stock roof rack or is the stock crossbars sturdy enough to handle the weight and pressure of bikes and skis on the highway?

Thanks!

I have inquired on several occasions about the same thing. I did not get any replies from folks with manuals for our cars…. From what I recall while doing the research, the oem luggage rack is rated to handle 100lbs.

For whatever its worth, I’ve got a 30 to 40 pound cargo box with kayak attachments that I carry two 45 pound kayaks on all on the oem luggage rack setup. So the total weight is about 120 to 130. The weight is bulky and sits high (you can see a picture in my album linked in my signature). My luggage rack parts are not in great condition either….

If you end up going with aftermarket crossbars, I’ll buy some of your oem crossbar hardware! (I need the brackets that hold the crossbars in place – will pay top dollar)

A bike sits real high though and probably exerts a lot of force. I throw mine in the back! The wagon is so spacious that I don't need to remove the wheels either. Much easier that mounting it on the roof.

I think it's marked on my crossbars that the maximum load is 100 pounds. I may be removing mine pretty soon safari. What are you willing to pay for a set?

40 shippred to 91302 if they are all (4) in good condition. I don't need the crossbars, just the brackets.

I'll have to see what kinda shape they are in when I get them off, but I honestly don't think the rack has ever been used.

i made my own 2 bike rack on my wagon and also use a cargo box (not at the same time), the rack isnt all that study but with a properly designed rack is can be done.

i used a strong steer section to connect the two sides of the rack so there is no twisting force exerted to the rack. i still avoid aggressive driving while a have a bike up there. the best solution is an aftermarket rack but i am just too cheap for that.

Thanks for all the great replies and info!

I've been just throwing my bike in the back but need more room when riding with a group.
I also just installed my Thule flat top 6 on the factory rack. I'll be sure to take some pics tomorrow and post them up
