transmission blown?

92 Camry V6 auto. For the longest time our transmission has been shifting into drive with a clunk when you accelerate slowly or on slow deceleration. I had a shop do a flush, they said there was nothing wrong with the tranny and the symptoms disappeared for a day and then were back again. I washed the engine bay with some degreaser and a hose immediately after that the transmission is doing what I think is called 'slipping'. The rpms go up to sometimes 4-5000 before it engages into drive. If we see the rpms going up we can take our foot off the gas let the transmission catch up and engage then off we go. It only does this from a dead stop. The transmission apparently had a full rebuild from a good shop 35000KM ago. It just seems odd that it occurred after washing the engine compartment. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Are you noticing any leaking around the bottom of the transmission or around it (ATF)?

sounds like the clutch packs in the transmission are worn.

what i might suggest is to pick up some "shudder-stop" transmission additive. this might sound crazy and anyone can feel free to oppose this opinion, but this stuff adds an abrasive material into the fluid that aides in friction of the clutches to help stop slipping. my buddy used this stuff years ago on his lumina when it was starting to slip. granted this isnt a permanent fix (a rebuild is) but it may prolong its life.

just an idea to consider.

Thanks for the suggestion, will definitely give it a try. Any suggestions where this can be purchased up in Canada? I just came out of surgery and will be immobile for 6 wks so no wrenching at all. Hopefully this will stretch things out till I can pull a wrench again. Worn clutch packs eh. I don't know diddley about transmission, would those have been replaced when the transmission had a full rebuild do you think?

Yeah, when they rebuild a transmission they will replace the clutch packs.

Doesn't make much sense that they are already going bad. You may want to do a pressure check on the transmission, which you can get the gauge assembly at most parts stores. (If theres an Advanced Auto or Autozone up there, they will have it... not sure if there is).

If your Lucky... try this:

open the hood up and on the left hand side there is a black box (Datalink Connector) Open that up and connect TE1 and E1 with a short jumper wire (Theres a diagram on the cover side)

Turn the key to the ON Position and watch the Overdrive light. See if its showing a code. If there are no codes it will flash every second continuously. If there is a code, it will flash you what the code is . Long flashes are your first number and short flashes are your second digit.

So 4 long flashes and 2 short flashes would be code 42 .

Since your car is Pre-OBDII it should have the OBD1 DLC Under the hood and under the dash.

Check those codes and check back

.. Note: This is the same method for Check engine too

Some more details on the tranny and the car and any maintenance on that would certainly help in troubleshooting on TN!

Not sure what to say. As far as I know it's a stock set up of a 92 V6 3000 Camry, auto. The transmission had a "major overhaul" from a transmission shop at 186000KM. The car now sits at 238000KM. This past summer I tore her apart to fix leaking oil on both valve covers. The upper motor mount needs replacing, although I've never noticed much of a shudder only the hard engaging into Drive and now this slipping since I cleaned the engine compartment. Do these transmissions work on a vacuum system for engaging? At the time of the oil fixing I changed plugs, distributor cab and rotor and plug wires. The other thing that is going on is every now and then I can smell a strong odor of gas, not emission fumes but gas. I can't see a leak anywhere but once I open up the outside air flow it is there, only when I'm sitting at a stop.

Checked for codes, none there. Just did the blink every second. Tried some seafoam trans cleaner that the wife grabbed at a parts store. Helped a bit but not much. Might try to see if I can find something better. So I'm guessing this means the transmission is going?
