3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I've got a '96 I4 Camry LE. I've got an annoying clunking noise coming from my right rear suspension. There's a fair amount of play in the sway bar, so I think the bushings are wearing out. I'd like to replace them with a polyurethane set that I know will maintain their durability. However, I can't seem to find the right ones anywhere. I've looked through both the Whiteline and Energy Suspension catalogs . . . maybe I'm missing something? I've measured the RSB at 17mm.
It's not listed as Camry polyurethane bushings for some reason. At least it wasn't when I got mine... Contact trd4life on here about a set (or GLP motorsports LLC on facebook). He should be able to hook you up with a set
Just some advice on the install, and it may go differently for you since I have 15 mm bar, but you'll want to heat up the bushings to make them more flexible since they are really hard. Also, the bushings won't fit the old bracket perfectly, so have a c clamp on hand, and get a longer bolt as well as a couple of washers to put between the bracket and the bolt head. Your final product should look something like this, notice the use of the two washers I refered to between the bolt head (12 mm in my case) and the braket, as well as the use of the new, longer bolt:

Hi Agni
Fellow desi here! Even I am looking for poly suspension stuff. All I got was inserts. Finally I went with Moog parts. I know they are rubber but right now the car rides like new :-)

The Following User Says Thank You to peshwa For This Useful Post:
Thanks for the quick responses. $40 sounds like a damn good deal for both sets - I'll definitely be contacting him about that.
Seems odd that I would have a 17mm bar while most other Gen3's are 15/16mm. I measured in the middle of the bar though, and in the picture it looks like the diameter of the bar changes a bit, or is that the just the perspective? I think I'll go measure again to make sure . . .

I think it might be the perspective on the shot, but I would measure really close to where the bushing is The main reason for the difference is that the 6 cylinders came with a thinner bar because of stronger strut assemblies, and 4 cylinders came with thicker sway bars to account for the weaker struts I consulted this thread and based on the fact that your car is a 4 cylinder, your car should have the 17 mm rear bar (0.67 inch) in the rear. I think your measurement is right
I would contact trd4life (Gabe) on facebook (glp motorsports llc. is his company page name), he usually responds much quicker there!

Wow thanks guys...lots of nice information! I am already done for my current DD camry (in my sig) but I am drooling over a V6+Manual Gen3 camry right now. Hope this helps for the suspension overhaul of that camry!

They Toyhead FSB bushings are too small. The biggest ones they have are 23mm, but the 4cyl FSB is 24mm. It may not seem like much, but trust me, it is. I had the Toyhead FSB bushings, and they just didn't fit properly. I lost money on those. I found a set of Energy Suspension 24mm "universal" poly bushings that fit perfectly...
So, for the front get Energy Suspension. I can't say about the RSB bushings, as I have a Whiteline RSB that came with a set of poly bushings.

May I ask where you got them?
I went to Autozone and they would have to special order the front bushings. He said they have universal Energy suspension bushings in 18mm, but they are for domestic vehicles. It looked exactly the same, I just went ahead and ordered from ES Parts.
Thanks uibalnme for chiming in. Your post was really helpful.

Ok so I received the bushings today and they didn't quite fit the original bracket - they're only about 1 & 3/8" tall - 3/8" shorter than the originals. Also, they don't have raised edges so I'm a bit worried about them working their way out from under the brackets. Sorry for the lack of pics, I didn't have my camera with me when I removed the old bushings. I'll post some next time.
Looks like I'll have to fabricate something to get them to work, which is kind of tough without welding capabilities (time to break out the JB Weld!). Or does anyone know if the brackets on the gen4's are smaller? It wouldn't be too much trouble to go to a junkyard.
