smell of burning oil and idle question

Ok, first question I have is when I start my car in the morning, my rpm's are at like 1800. As it warms up, I can hear it declining. When I am driving, it is usually at about 800 at a stop sign. Is this all normal? Seems kind of high. Just had the timing belt replaced.

Second question, man, do I smell burning oil when I start it. I am using seafoam in the oil. Was told that will soften rings and seals. Any suggestions on this. Does it matter what kind of oil I use, I have 5w30.

1994 xle, v6, 223000 miles. Thanks, Curt

Since you have 223K on your car, when you first start it ... Your probably smelling burning oil because your valve seals are hard now and cracked. The oil from sitting is leaking past the valves and dropping into your cylinders. When you start your car, its igniting the oil / gas mixture and blowing it out the exhaust.

You hear your car idle fast when you first start it because that's what its supposed to do. The normal Idle is 750 +/- 50 RPM so 800 is within spec.

Oil is not really a factor here. Its more the age of the car and condition of the seals on the valves

Seafoam won't soften the rings or seals. Its a flush.

Seafoam will seriously thin your oil out and increase oil consumption.

If you smell burning oil, then you have a leak somewhere dripping on the exhaust. Check your valve cover gaskets.

The burning smell is probably the valve cover gaskets. My rear valve cover gasket is leaking and you can definitely smell it at idle.
