3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hey all, this morning on my way to work my engine blew on the highway. The wrist pin sheared off and the rod is now loose in the cylinder. Its a shame because the vehicle only has 147,000 km on it....I am left with the question whether to rebuild, buy a wrecker motor. or just scrap the car entirely. The front shocks are due to be replaced soon as well. I know that if i rebuild it i may run into more damaged components. Can i really trust a motor from a junkyard?
1996 Camry, its in okay condition the exterior was vandalized last summer with a lacrosse ball. Other than that, no rust. Lots of sludge in the engine, due to the previous owner not changing the oil for 2 years. The shocks are in need of replacement.
Without seeing the car, can't say. My general rule is if the body is more or less flawless, I'll consider putting an engine into it. Otherwise, I'd look for another one depending on where you are in Canada.
Swap an engine in yourself, with sludge, a broken wristpin you likely need headwork, a new crank, cylinders bored, new oil pump, etc. If you can't do the work yourself, pick up a new car. 147k km is pretty low for a 96 though.

It is , but he mentioned the previous owner neglected it, unfortunately
I would pull the head off and inspect the cylinder walls before going forward. If you have major damage inside the cylinder wall you will more than likely need to purchase a new block. If you have to go that far, I would just get a motor and swap it out.
