please help me with the AC MODE control

Hi, my uncle has a 1998 Camry LE and he is having trouble getting the mode switch (having air blow to your face, feet, defrosting the windshield) to work.
Is there a relay or wire that needs to be replaced? He took everything apart and couldn't find an answer. He also went to the junk yard and went through 3 whole switch consoles, but it didn't work.

For a '98 LE the air recirculation/air from outside lever is strictly mechanical. Maybe the linkage became disconnected behind the HVAC controls...?

edit: Just reread your post. Yes, for the directional controls (face, legs, etc) there are electronic stepper motors to control things. Anddddd that's when it gets fun to diagnose. Are you hearing any motors moving in the dash when you switch the a/c switches?
