Compression ring order?

So I was assembling my lower end today, and had to stop when I noticed that the machine shop had opened my set of rings, and did not put them back into the right places in the package. They are not marked as to where they go. Does anyone know which compression ring goes on top?

One is beveled, it's a square bevel though, not angled, and the other is square with no bevel, and looks to be made of three layers, dark grey (almost black) on the top and bottom and dull grey in the middle.

Here is a picture to explain how they look, just remember that they are probably not in the correct positions on the piston.

They are beck/arnley rings that came with the piston set.

Rings will often have marks on them and lettering which usually goes up. The top ring will be coted with chromoly or nitride while the second ring will usually be plain cast iron. The second ring should also have a larger gap when compressed into the cylinder. Some of the second rings I have seen also have a groove near the edge that goes down to help oil control. So in your picture I would say you have them reversed.

thanks, but they are after market and the only mark is a dot on the beveled one to signify which side goes up, I wish they were smart enough to mark them first and second.

If they are not marked and you don't know what each should look like how can you tell they are in the wrong packages?

So they are both square cut? How can you have a bevel if it's square? Not trying to be an ass just looking for some clarity.

They were in one long paper envelop with three sections, each section had a number 1,2, or 3. The oil scrappers were in the section that says they go on the top of the piston.

Notched would be a much better description, I found this on picture on another site that says the notched ring is #2. It wasn't my set of rings, #1 is different, but I think mrturrari is right.

If they were in a envelope labeled 1 2 3 1. should be top 2.should be middle 3. should be the oil scrapper on the bottom. That's how it worked when I rebuilt my engine.
Nvm i just saw your problem fail for reading :/. My top ring was a dark color and very hard to put around. middle was a bronze type color and then the oil scrappers where self explanatory there was two rings one that went on top and one that went on the bottom and the zig zag thing that went in betweeen

I know the oil scraper goes on the bottom, it's just Because I know the scrappers were in the wrong section (section #1) That I don't know about the other two. At least one of them was in the wrong section, because thats where the scrappers should have been (#3), but maybe all three were wrong.
