3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have a leak around the #4 cylinder on passenger side and trying to rule out the "sources" one by one. Resealed the Valve Cover Gasket (VCG) again this past weekend. Reused the existing VCG as it's just one year old and looked good.
~175K miles on the car. I have owned from 133K. Neglected till 164K. Had only 3 oil changes till that time.I know I know I am an idiot But hey I hadn't discovered TN that time
Did 7 oil changes this year with Pennzoil HM 10W30+Purolator PureONE on ~2K Oil Change Intervals... ran my baby for 11K miles in 2010
Was prepared for worse when I popped open the VCG. How does it look?
BTW I am running Mobil 1 HM 10W-30 right now and leaking a lot.

Looks OK.
No visible scoring or excessive wear on cam lobes or cam gears.
I would do the seafoam in the crankcase just before the next oil change to help clean it up some.
Yeah, that doesn't look bad at all, considering. It's got some staining or varnish or whatever, but nothing bad. But I'd be the first to say I'm no expert.

Thanks guys for your replies. So there's no sludge per se, only varnish. But will varnish on these parts mean there is "more" in the block? Is it safe to run seafoam/B12 Chemtool on this motor? I wouldnt wish to damage this motor as its my only car right now

Yeah, thick varnish at places but not too bad given the history. Besides prior miles of neglect, varnish can also mean the oil is being cooked when owners are on a shorter 3-5K OCI.
How about AutoRX with dino oil? And then maybe go to Motorcraft Synthetic Blend (Walmart), Valvoline Durablend (Autozone recently ran a sale). If Fremont temps are like 50-60 deg F then 10W-30 should still work fine.

nothing terrible for the mileage if you ask me. I would change oil next time to dino, sea foam it and change oil again to dino (I know it's a 100mile / 1 day OCI, but it's HIGHLY recommended this way) and then use auto-rx (and then again OCI with dino for rinse phase ... it takes a while). whatever sea foam dislodged and you didn't drain will get liquified by auto-rx later. I think it's a safer way.
keep it on synthetic throughout the winter, it will do some more cleaning (did for my 5s-fe). you may want to change filter only half way through the Winter OCI (add 0.2qts of fresh oil after swapping filters).
I think you had an oil leak on cyl#4 from top of tube, meaning the grommet is bad or 30mm nut was loose. those bastards get loose sometimes. recently when re-doing timing job on 5s-fe like 2 months ago I found nuts below torque specs... and on formerly clean spark plug tube had liquid oil on walls inside ... I actually should re-torque them soon, they might be affecting my fuel trims again ...
does it leak from any other spot now? synthetic oils make leaks and seeping gaskets easier to spot because of their finer particles (and cleaning package they carry) when compared to dino oils (ask me how I know hehe)...
I think this is how yours will look like later (note how most of black streaks under valve cover stayed and you can still see darker spots on spark plug tubes).

I am still hunting. I resealed the VCG and apparently the leak is still there. The #4 injectors have all kind of slimy dirt around them. But when I run my hands around the gasket I dont see a single drop or trace of oil. I am as confused as the democrats right now Could there be significant blow by oil blowing out of the Fuel Injectors? What could be the other symptoms of such an occurrence?
