Oil level mystery... what is going on...

This is my dad's 2000 Toyota Camry LE (4cylinder). After draining old oil I've put 1 quart of new oil into it and decided to check exactly how many quarts it takes... the manual states that for 5S-FE engine it's .6Qts and for 1MZ-FE it's 1.3 Qts...

Since I've already added 1 full quart I thought it would already be too much - I was wrong! When I pulled the dip stick it was completely dry...

Confused, I've added another 1/2 quart and started the car just enough to get it off the ramps and shut off. Checked again after few minutes and it's still dry?!?!?

What am I doing wrong here?! What's the proper capacity for the 4 cylinder?!

THx,
James

I don't know where you are getting your specs from but they are wrong.

Minimum capacity after you drain the oil, and replace the filter is 5 quarts. The numbers you quoted "5S-FE engine it's .6Qts and for 1MZ-FE it's 1.3 Qts" are wrong, very wrong.

If you try driving much further, without adding the correct amount of oil you will ruin your engine, guaranteed.

Can you scan, and post a pic of that page? My 96 5SFE has always taken 4.6qts every oil change.

I know these camrys aren't big, but their not lawnmowers. There's a reason why they sell oil in 5 quart jugs.

4cyl is 4quarts of oil.

That 1.2 or whatever your saying is the differential capacity. Or the amount of oil that's in the filter. Either way if youve driven or run that engine with 2 or less quarts of oil for even a couple minutes shes dinked. Big time.

Jesus. That small amount of oil in the 4 cylinder engine is NOT going to make it happy. They HATE being low on oil. One quart is STARVING it. The correct capacity is 3.8 quarts. Just dump in 3 and a half jugs, then check the level. Add more as needed. Usually mine would take a full 4 quarts.

Here are the photos:

1) Back of the Owner's manual - which points you to page 226

2) Page 226 itself which proclaims to have all the details about the oil:

That is the difference between the LOW and FULL level on the dipstick. That is not the capacity of the oil sump. Now look at the dipstick.

Well it's right in front of you. If you look up two paragraphs you will see that it says the approximate quantity of oil needed to to fill between the low level and the full level on the dipstick is indicated below for reference. The quantity listed is how much oil needs to be added to bring the level from the "low" level to the "full" level. It has nothing, repeat, nothing whatsoever to do with the quantity of oil in the crankcase.

If you look at the back of the owners manual, you will find a section called Specifications. That's where you will find the the fluid capacities. And you will see that the Oil capacity is 5 quarts.

EDIT:
I just looked it up, Section 8, Specifications, and it's on page 252, upper left hand corner of the owners manual.

If you're not hearing any new noises, you are probably ok.
