Question Distributor plug oil leak 2.2 Camry.

Hello everyone.
Here is situation: 2000 2.2L. Leaking oil, pretty bad, from under metal bracket, on which ignition coil packs installed, on driver side of the engine little below VC seal. There is a half of glass of oil on transmission top next to speed sensor every other day.
I searched on TN for couple hrs and found and read couple treads about this problem, but steel can’t clear couple things.
I know now there is a plug which covers opening where distributor used to be attached on pre 97 2.2 engines.

1.Is this plug, aluminum or plastic? Some treads says it’s plastic and has to be replaced, others – it is aluminum and just need to be resealed.

2.How do I get to it? Some tread says I have to remove valve cover and just pull it out, is it pressed between VC and head? Or I need to remove air box, and intake hose and metal bracket with coils, and pray this plug out without opening VC?
On pre 97 motors access to distributer was much easier than on 2000 model.

3.I still didn’t understand what is “half moon”, apparently there is something next to the distributor plug that need to be resealed as well to prevent leaks.

Some time ago mechanic took care of minor leak form VC, but after that oil started leaking on the same side of the engine again. As far I understood, he didn’t reseal neither “half moon” nor distributor plug. So this time I’m planning to fix it myself.
I’m not a really knowledgeable about engine work and got only average set of wrenches and tools, but prefer to do it myself, simply don’t want to pay for whole day of my car seating in the shop and half ass work.
If someone had same problem in the past, or know how to fix it, please share your experience.

Its plastic. Remove 2 10mm bolts and itll come out. You need a new one. Mine was stuck to the cap and i just resealed the bottom of it with some black rtv since I didnt have time to buy one.

There are also 2 slugs on either side of the head towards the front. Those should be resealed as well.

You need a 30mm socket. Its a royal pain to tighten those nuts with a pair of channel locks, but it is doable.

Half moons are metal and if you remove them just clean them up and use some silicone or Toyota's Form in place Gasket. The cam plug on the back of the head is a metal plug with a rubber outer coating. It can be resealed or you can get a new one for under $3.00. In my opinion, if it has already been done, I'd just get a new one.

just called Toyota of Dallas: VC gasket $16, distributer hole plug $8.50!, spark plug tubes gasket $7 each!, toyota silicon $15!...
I'll get VC gasket from dealer-good price and plug to-no one has it but toyota, but rest of the stuff coming from NAPA.

Gary:

Do you guys have any plans on automating your parts search at your dealership in the future? Sure would be nice if you did. Could just put in the order and it would be sweet!

At the moment it is still on the table. One part of me thinks to do it for my customers convenience, but the old fashion person in me thinks that would take away from the personal attention and service I like to give each and everyone of my customers.

I have looked at those computerized systems and sometimes they are not always so accurate. They don't allow for varialbes(to much info to go into).

So at the moment if you need something you can email me, call me, or PM me and I'll get you a quote.
