3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Here's my quandry- driving down the road, the engine stops. No warning, no fluids gushing out, no parts strewn down the road, it just quits. Cranks and cranks, but no start. Replaced the fuel pump on a hunch. Nothing. Took it to a shop, a guy that has worked on my cars before, and he discovers the timing belt has snapped. Puts on a new timing belt, and nothing. He suspects the distributor, so we try that- nothing. It will crank and run for a few seconds before dying. It will run and run if you spray fuel into the intake. So, new fuel pump, new timing belt, new dizzy, and nothing. It is getting spark, all the timing components are kosher, but still nothing. Fuel filter flows freely. 1995 toyota camry, 186,XXX, 4cyl. HELP!!!!
idk what the actual pressure is. i'll have him check taht as well. the crank angle sensor (think that's the right term) and the ignition module will be first on the list. been scouring the interweb, and there's as many opnions as there are viable solutions. been trying to find "what causes a timing belt to break" to no avail really. the belt was not beyond it's life. something happened to cause it to break. all the internals (as best as you can judge w/o tearing the engine down) are all kosher. *sigh* merry christmas. lol
Did your car run smooth before this? Does it run smooth now? Does it stay running when you give it gas?
Assuming the new fuel pump works, and all that was changed dealt with timing, I would look closer at the timing. I have a Maxima that was out of time. It would run for a couple seconds before dying if I didn't open the throttle. That was ignition timing but I suppose it would be similar if the valve timing was out.
EDIT: Yeah, checking the fuel pressure wouldn't be a bad idea. Something could have gone wrong there.
def will have him check the fuel pressure. it ran like a champ until this happened. i panicked and threw a new fuel pump in it, but that changed nothing. i am pondering putting the old fuel pump back in it! lol it starts and runs for sec by itself (until the prime runs out), and will run smooth w/ fuel sprayed into the intake. if you give it throttle, it dies immediately. i will have him double/triple/quadruple check the timing and the fuel pressure. could this be an ignition module... or would that keep it from starting at all? is there a sensor or something that tells the pump to continue pumping once the engine is started? it just baffles me that it will run for a second, then croak.
sooooo... i took the original fuel pump to the mechanic, and had him check fp, double check timing (which was as close to factory fresh as you can get), and some other odds and ends.... turns out, much to my amazement, that the fuel pump was wired exactly backwards. yup. followed the instructions that came with the aftermarket pump, to the letter, and as it turns out, they're wrong. but only by color identification, so no big deal. oh well, at least IT'S RUNNING!!!!!!! WOOOHOOOOOOOO!!!!!! thanks for all the input- you guys are the bestest!
