Car doesnot move in R and then in D

My car was stuck in snow. I tried to move it, and I drove it out of the pile of snow. When I was trying the car will not move in drive mode. I pressed the gas pedal too many times to move the car and the car overheated, but it never moved in D but it moved in reverse direction. Then I found that the coolant had drained and when I filled up the coolant, it would mover in D but it wont move in R.

I know it sounds crazy, but this is what I am stuck with. Any idas will be greatly appreciated.

150,000 miles.

A clutch pack might have burned out.

Check with a local ATRA member shop. As I said in another thread, no guarantees, there are duds out there with everything. But it's better than a no name corner garage.

Hi John,

The car had overheated and the coolant was bubbling hot. There was burning smell, I thought it was oil. I will call the towing guys tomorrow and hope for the best.

Another thing, when I put the car neutral, it wont move in reverse direction. It was so tight even after three adults pushing the car, it hardly moved.

Thanks for the reply.

Sounds like some clutch pack/brake band stuck in gear even in neutral.

Any suggestions on how to release the brake band?

Thanks.

These clutches and brake bands are the "apply devices" controlled by the valve body to change gears. There is nothing the driver can do.

When in neutral I think only the OD clutch should be engaged and basically everything should spin freely - but not in your case. Therefore some of these clutches and bands are engaged when they're not supposed to.

A competent transmission shop should be able to tell you more. How's the ATF condition and fluid level? If you can do your own ATF change maybe try that first. Maybe drop the pan and check for debris too before spending big bucks.
