timing belt labor

I got a quote from a local shop for the timing belt/waterpump/drive belts/seals/valve cover gasket job for $575. Is this a fair price for this job for a 99 camry?

sounds about right for a shop to do it

You could save a bunch of money and DIY for a LOT less

If its for the V6, that is a great deal. Our local dealer quoted us $885 for timing belt/ water pumps seals and everything. And another $680 for the rear valve cover gasket and spark plugs. I just ended up doing everything myself.

I would say that $575 is a good price for even the 5sfe, if high quality parts are being used.

Your thread title says "timing belt labor". Does the estimate you are providing NOT include parts?

yup I second. I paid $480 for labor itself (I brought them my own OEM parts) to a (formerly) friendly local shop when doing timing belt, water pump, cam/crank seals and oil pump seals/gaskets (plus thermostat), drive belts would be included if I wanted to change them (i didn't as they were less than a year old or so).

labor is usually charged per book, so 3.5hrs for timing job (including WP) on 5s-fe and 5.9 hours for oil pump (the longest time counts), then multiply by shop's hourly rate and you've got the labor and then add cost of parts.

$575 is OK, but most likely it includes some cheap aftermarket parts?

Do they replace both pulleys (idler and tensioner)? Make sure they do the oil pump o-ring and shaft seal too. $575 is reasonable if they use OEM parts and install two new pulleys.

eBay has an "oem" timing belt kit for $184.14. But an aftermarket one for <$90.

Did we ever determine if his "labor" estimate included any parts?

I will be providing my own OEM parts, the quote is just for labor alone.

yeah thats not so good

Are they charging $100.00 / hr because that would make sense for 5.75hr

The total timing / seal / valve cover change should run 4 - 6 hours or less

6 hours being a high estimate

yeah, their hourly rate seems hella high, try asking Toyota dealer if they could do the labot with your own bought elsewhere OEM parts, probably coming from another dealer.
$100/hr seems a little too high for an independent shop IMO...

Timing belt is a big money maker for many repair shops. I'm not surprised at the high cost.
