3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I recently swapped motors in my 99 camry, 4 cylinder, cause the old one siezed. Everything works good now except that after driving about 3 or 4 miles the gauge fuse pops. Which shuts off the charging system and gauges and a bunch of other stuff. If I change the gauge fuse as soon as the car is put in drive again the fuse pops again. The car was sitting for a while and I know there was a mouse in there but this is the only problem and I don't see any evidence that the mouse was chewing on wires. Like I said after a cold start driving 3 or 4 miles then it pops. But once it pops it pops ever time its put in drive after that. It only seems to pop when put in drive. any thoughts? I looked up the wiring and didn't see anything related to that fuse when the car is in drive.

Ok update, still have not found the cause for blowing the gauge fuse. It still does it only when put into drive and will now do it even without being driven and with the engine off. Anybody know what circuits are turned on only when put in drive? Also anybody know where to get free wiring diagrams? I have the haynes manual but its not that great.

Well there's obviously the lights... try taking the bulbs out and see what happens.
I don't really know what else goes in for automatics when you shift into D other than it goes forward...
Second: It's probably wiring problems. Maybe your wires are too old and can't maintain a steady wattage when you turn on your car. Check if any wires and conduits need replacing.
yes i got the right fuses. no the wiring all looks good. another? is there a seperate computer for the trans or is it built into the ecm? I found a really good wiring diagram and tells what all the fuses do and I've narrowed it down to the computer for the trans. or a wire in that circuit.

When I had the fuse for the gauges blowing on my '98 it was when shifting into reverse. The cause was the wiring harness for the lights on the trunk lid, which flex each time the trunk is open and closed. The wires eventually break near the support arm for the trunk, and make contact with each other, blowing the fuse. In my case, this happened when shifting into reverse, but perhaps the motion of shifting into drive in your case lights up the reverse lights just enough to blow the fuse. You could try a new fuse and then shift only into reverse and back to see if the fuse blows; if so, you will know what's causing it. Just thought it might be worth a shot.
Thanks but it wont blow even if sitting in reverse for a while. But as soon as it is shifted into drive it blows, like the little D on the gauges dosen't even have time to light up it happens so fast.

It ended up being a wire against the EGR tube and melted so it was shorting out on the tube. But I did an engine swap and just routed the wire wrong. If your car is all stock and factory than you shouldn't have a melted wire anywhere.
