P0300 and P0303 codes 4cyl 1998

My 1998 4cyl with 175xxx miles was giving me a lot of problems: It was running crappy and backfiring.

It was throwing a lot of codes: p0300 (random cyl misfire), p0301 (cly 1 misfire), p0302 (cyl 2 misfire), p0303 (cyl 3 misfire), p0304 (cyl 4 misfire), and p0401 (egr flow insufficient)

From this i cleaned the EGR system with carb cleaner by taking off the EGR valve, EGR modulator, and the tube from the EGR valve to the engine (but i havent tested the components)...they weren't that dirty

I replaced all 4 spark plugs (the old ones had carbon build up on them and they were 60,000 miles old). I replaced the fuel filter. I ran seafoam through the intake and i added fuel system cleaner. The current plug wires only have 60k on them so i didnt replaced them.

I checked for any vaccum leaks but didnt find any.

After all this i cleared the codes and drove it around....It hasnt improved its running at all throughout the whole time, it runs fine at higher rpms, but it struggles and Backfires under a load or at idle.

NOW THE ONLY CODES COMING UP ARE P0300 and P0303 (random cylinder misfire and cyl 3 misfire)

I thought that the timing belt might have jumped but now that the only code that has come up is the cyl 3 misfire, that has changed my mind about the timing having jumped.

NOW I DONT KNOW WHAT TO THINK. MAYBE COIL PACKS??? Its too hot to work on and test them now though.

Does anyone have any ideas for me?

It also seems to have developed a pretty good rear main seal leak recently, but thats a different subject.

After checking the above resistance, remove the coil pack and test the continuity from one of the pins listed above to the bottom of the ignition coil.

Yea im hoping its the coil packs, but i didnt know that it could just cause one cyl to misfire....since there are 2 plug wires attached to each coil pack....wouldnt it cause 2 cylinders to misfire if the coil pack was bad?

Mission accomplished. It was a bad spark plug wire. It had burned a hole through the side of the boot and was jumping through to the inside of the spark plug cylinder in the number 3 cyl

thanks very much for all help guys
