Won't shift + other problems

I have an 01 Solara. I just replaced the alternator. While I was replacing it I did short out the terminal lead so I don't know if this is what caused my problem. The problem is that I can't get it out of park. Almost all of the electronics don't work. No power windows, radio, power locks, turn signals, brake lights. I do have head lights and the warning beep works.

I have dont the normal checks. The brake switch is ok, the fuses seem to be good. I haven't checked every fuse. My guess is it is something that controls everything. But I don't know what that is or how to test for it.

How can you tell if a fusible link is bad?

I found the problem. The 100amp fuse was blown. I can't remove it though. Is there some secret or is it just a mater of brute force?

you need to bend the plastic tabs outwards and pull out the whole module in which the 100A fusible link block sits. there is 2 screws on sides (you can't see them yet) that hold it in place, they need to be removed to replace it.

check all other fuses too.

good luck!

Thankyou. I was able to get it pass the tabs, but the module only comes up so much. I have clear access to the front screw but the back screw is blocked by the other 'fuse box'. How do you get access to that screw. I was thinking of drilling a hole thrugh the box but I am sure there is a better way.

On most models you have to unbolt the fuse box itself and lift it up to get to those screws. Just be sure to disconnect the negative battery cable before you start.

Yeah, what Mike says is true on Solaras as well. there is 2 10mm bolts holding fuse box on driver side and one lock tab which needs unlocking with flat screw driver to release box from fender.
not the fuse box is also held by plastic clip on bottom and you won't have access to those clips before removing the wheel and fender liner below fender.

there should be enough slack on wires to pull the ALT 100A fuse box out enough (after releasing the fuse box and maybe unclipping wiring harness in one or two spots) to get to those screws. it takes some time to get it done right, be patient.
