Gen 3 Camry Hood Liner Material

Is the hood liner made of asbestos? I'm talking about the insulation of sorts that is formed to the underside of the hood.

I sure hope not! I installed it on two Gen3's so far that didn't have the under hood insulator. Looking at the material itself, I really don't think it's asbestos because it was banned in the U.S. going back to the late 70's.

If you look around on other car forums you will find that lots of people remove the hood liner with no problems. I had an N15 Nissan Pulsar (might be an Australian model) without a liner for about 150 000km with no problems. Some people with front wheel cars remove them as part of an effort to remove weight at the front of the car to reduce understeer.


They are usually made of compressed fibre - some even use coconut fibre in an effort to be green. They are more of a barrier than acutal insulation.

I had to change a broken t-fitting for the washer nozzles a few months ago While digging around for the fitting, some of the liner got pulled out. It looks like fiber glass.

^ I have to agree. I have a torn one in my garage that is the original off my 94 Camry's hood. It looks like fiberglass to me.

Mine was eaten by some unknown animal when the car was a month old (along with the wiring to both O2 sensors and the tubing to the windshield squirters). It was replaced at that time. I saved the old one just in case the insurance company wanted to see it. It's been in my garage ever since.
