Broken Rear Strut, Can Drive

My wife is traveling and the 96 Camry rear driver side strut broke, at least that is what she thinks. The rear suspension has dropped very low and when she drives its very bouncy.

As she is on the road, can she drive 50 miles or does she need to get it repaired where she is? Can she replace just the broken one or should they both be replaced.

If it dropped low then the spring probably snapped. If that's the case consider getting a complete assembly, especially considering the cost of individual components:

Online it's like $160+shipping, but she should be able to find a parts store at a higher price. I'd check the local Autozone, and sign up for the Autozone Awards card to get some credit.

The components should be replaced both sides at a time. However, she may be able to patch one side and then the other when she comes back. At least the dealer will do that if you claim warranty and won't even touch the other side.

I don't know exact what went bad, but I wouldn't drive around with a broken suspension component. It may affect steering/braking and if so won't be safe to her and others.
