3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
We have owned four Camry's. We have two 1994's now. They have all been four cylinder cars but I am looking at a '95 with a six cylinder. Are the six cylinder engines as reliable as the fours are, or do they have some issues. Thanks
As far as I know, there's no significant diff in reliability between them. There's a potential for oil sludging in both engines in later years, per this link:
• Camry 4 cylinder from 1997-2001,
• Camry 6 cylinder from 1997-2002,
• Camry Solara 4 cylinder from 1999-2001,
• Camry Solara 6 cylinder 1999-2002,
• Sienna 6 cylinder from 1998-2002,
• Avalon 6 cylinder from 1997-2002,
• Celica 4 cylinder from 1997-1999,
• Highlander 6 cylinder from 2001-2002,
• Lexus ES 300 from 1997-2002 and
• Lexus RX 300 from 1999-2002.

IMO, the non-VVT-i 1MZ-FE in the '95 (doesn't have the sludging issue) is as reliable as the sunrise and sunset......but that's if it has had a good life and has been serviced properly............if it has been and the car is good, I wouldn't hesitate.

Pre-97 Non-vvti (1994-1996) 1MZ V6 engines had oil coolers, where as later models did not... IIRC. Some think that makes the difference.

Also the 1MZ after 96 had a different valve cover, and PCV design leading to sludging questions.. My parents 96 1MZ-FE runs smooth as silk and has just under 190,000 well maintaned miles. I feel 300,000 miles will be no problem in this car, 96 Avalon (a camry with a different body).

Piston heads ran hotter for emissions purposes as well no? But yes, many of us V6 guys have high miles on here. As with any car, the key is maintenance
