3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hey guys I am fairly new to this forum and wanted to ask what do you 3rd generation owners prefer? I have a 1993 Camry LE V6 and it purrs like a Kitten.
.
I have driven a few four cylinders and they seemed pretty peppy too. How much of a difference is there when it comes to reliability? Gas Mileage et cetera? When I am in the market for another Camry someday I would like to get another 3rd generation. I bought mine from a guy who's sister in law bought it brand new in Florida and sold it to him and his wife. It had only been up here since 2003 so no to many winters. I am not looking to gain much information out of this thread but rather and opinion of what you like better.
I prefer the 4 cylinder over the 6 cylinder basically because it is cheaper and easier to maintain. It is a real bear to get at the rear spark plugs on the 6 cyl. and you have to take off the plenum to replace the valve cover gasket on the rear bank.

Although it feels a little sluggish at times, I love my 4cly because its reliable and cheaper when it comes to gas. The 6cyl is nice but the power it has is not enough to justify its gas mileage and consumption..IMO
Either one is great, sometimes i wish i had the v6, but the 4cyl will get you around as well.

I have been averaging 25.7 mpg with my Camry this winter. I do about 50 city/ 50 highway. What do you other members get for gas mileage this question applies to 4 cylinders and 6 cylinders.
The factory epa for the 4cyl is 18/26 with a combined 21mpg. I have a 94 4cyl and those numbers seems to be about right. I do a lot of highway driving and there is a difference when it comes to city driving (it seems to burn way more gas). For such a underpowered car the epa really sucks but these cars were made in the 90's. Im sure the 6cy is worse than that, i think it was even considered a clunker if im not mistaken.

My 93 V6 gets an average of 25.7 mpg that seems odd that your 4 cylinder gets a combined 21.
Anyone else have an opinion to this?
Lets say you could back to.... 1992 when the 3rd Generation Camrys were introduced what trim and engine would you pick?
I would have to say a the 4-door XLE with the V6.

Heck no. In 1992 (and 1993) the V6 SE model was offered with a manual transmission. I'll take one of those with the gray leather interior, ABS, and skip the sunroof. I'm 6'2". Yes, I really like the 92/93's with the 3VZ-FE engine. Lots of low end torque. The 94-01 1MZ-FE V6 is good and reliable too. I owned a 1996 5S-FE 4 cylinder (92-01) and it was pretty peppy. I'd reccomend you test drive both a V6 and a I4. If you don't need the extra power the V6 offers, then stick with the 4 cylinder. Fuel consumption is about the same for all 3 engines.

My 4-banger w/auto gets 22 all city, 25 - 28 mixed, and 36 all hwy.
I love the fuel efficiency, but it's definitely lacking in the power department. I'd love to swap in a 1mzfe, or even a 2azfe just for the extra HP, but my car is what it is. Well, that, and I just don't have the money to do a swap.

If I could get any camry, ide get the 2dr coupe with a 1mzfe / 5-speed
I'de also get a 4dr wagon . lol
I'd have to agree, those coupes are sexy.... but if i were to go back I would've probably talked my dad into getting a V6...maybe he was looking out for me knowing that he would pass it on.

Coupes never got an option of the 5-speed with the V6 engine. If you wanted an OEM V6 paired with a 5-speed, you'd HAVE to get a 92-93 sedan. The 97-01 models also had a V6 with 5-speed option.
