3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I replaced my battery today and noticed that the two long rods used to hold down the battery were of differeent lengths. One is an inch or two longer than the other. Does anyone know which one goes in the front and which one in the back. The longer one doesn't seem to fit well on either side.
I had the same issue. And I can't remember which goes where. BUT... grab a flash light and look down where you're trying to hook the rods. Then look for holes or seams to hook onto BELOW that. That's how I figured it out.

Long goes in front, and it's 10 1/2 inches from crook-to-threaded end. I know because I need to replace mine. Again. I have a bitch of time finding a replacement that long. I think last time a gave up and used a chunk of all-thread, which is probably why it's corroded away again already.

Oh, I never bothered to try to get them at the dealership; I'm sure they could hunt 'em up. I'm on a first name basis with one of the parts counter guys there now. But their banker's hours, 9-5, are so inconvenient for me. I've just tried many auto parts stores looking for generic kits.

Try getting in touch with toyotapartsguy.... toyotapartsman....? Something like that. I'm sure he could ship you one for like $0.02.

Your right. The long one goes in the front. The hook at the bottom actually hooks into a hole in the side body panel ( not into a hole in the battery tray like you would expect).
Here are the part numbers. They should match the diagram above.
