3rd Generation 95 Camry XJ Rebuild

Hi All,

Ok so my old car finally cried enough one day and my Da suggested I get his old 95 Camry back on the road again. Not much was needed... just a new engine, gearbox, radiator, electrics, ECU, erm... cant remember whatelse, anyway:

My question is this:

I put the 2.2 3C-T engine into it (same engine as before) and before I got the new ECU she would start (just) then idle at 1000 RPM occasionally "missing" a bit. This would go on for a few minutes then she would finally cut out. I got an electrical engineer to look at the car and he figured it could be caused by the ECU. Low and behold when we took it out it was dead so i got another (2nd hand) one. Now sometimes when I try and start her it refuses! Its turning and turning so there should be no reason the engine wouldn't start it really just point blank refuses. When she gets going the new ECU will hold the idle at 2000 RPM until the car is warm then it comes down. I think this is excessively high for an idle speed and was wondering what everyones thoughts are on reasons behind this. (NOTE: when I select Drive the car will idle at 700RPM in gear thought she will still "miss" occasionally when cold)

In addition to that question what could the "miss" be? I had thought Glow plugs but these have been replaced, I am now thinking voltage delivery to the plugs...

Thanks!

A 3ct? really? never new that camry's had diesels, i dont think glow's would cause it to miss, but defiantly could cause it to refuse to start once cold. im no diesel expert but have had some experience.

Errr... are you sure it isn't a 1985 model? Or is it a 1995 with a 3C diesel swap? If it's the latter...

edit: Further research shows that the 3C-T was used from 1994-1998(?) in some non-US market camrys. The OP is in Armagh which appears to be part of the UK. Soooo him owning a diesel 95 is possible... my mistake.

Thanks for the replies, I am indeed in the UK. The car was originally a Japanese import so it may not be a model anyone is familiar with. I just thought that someone might have some sort of an idea as to what the problem could be.

Ahhh yes, the V40 frame camry. It probably looks like this then?

There should be someone around that's familiar with diesels and the non-widebody japanese import camrys around somewhere. I'm not one of them sadly. We mostly see V10 and V20 widebody models on the forum. I actually think one of our members is a diesel mechanic... i'll shoot him a PM about this thread.

Would this engine use common rail injection? On does it have an injection pump? I gotta do my share of research but I don't think glow plugs could be the culprit unless you're in really cold weather. Make sure the fuel system is free of any air. Air is murder for diesel fuel systems. I'm leaning more towards that being the issue.

Hi folks,

Thought I'd update this thread. It's been a while... a long while... but I got the car sorted in the end.

The problem was, as usual, a compound of different things. Basically it needed 4 new glow plugs, new injectors, and an injector pump. Basically the engine wasn't holding compression to generate heat caused by an under powered pump (injectors were replaced too as a pro caution but I've put them back in to satisfy my curiosity - and they work fine) the issue was compounded by the heater plugs being wasted and not generating heat at start. Oh and it was really cold this winter in Armagh

So new injector pump and plugs seem to have done the trick. A lot less smoke (only on heavy acceleration) and starts every time as well as having a constant idle speed. Plus my MPG is back into the 30's (UK MPG that is)

Anyway, thanks for your posts and suggestions, I hope to have this car going for another couple of years yet now
