3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Strange problem (1999 Toyota Camry). The dashboard clock started dimming (mostly on the minutes side of the clock) and if I press on the face of the clock and release, it comes back to full illumination. However, after a minute or two, if goes back to dim. The hours side is brighter than the minutes side but both are dim compared to normal. Is this the clock going bad or is there a loose wire in terminal or corrosion on a terminal? Anyone out there know about this? I saw someone on e-bay claiming they repair the clocks for 4th gen Camry's within 24 hours and will send them back to you for about $25. Seems like it must be some type of minor repair for that little money. Before I go to the trouble of trying to pull the clock, does anyone have a quick fix for this? If not, any diagrams of how to pull the clock without destroying the plastic bezel?? Thanks.
I would think it would be a loose wire on the connector. When you press on the clock, you push it enough to make the wire regain full contact with the terminal, and after a few minutes of sitting the wire becomes loose again. Just my guess.
As far as disassembly goes, there should be two or so screws around the top of the bezel. Remove those and then you should be able to take the bezel out. Then you can access your connections and clock.
Thought I'd try again as only the94Camryman was nice enough to post a reply. Thanks 94! I'm a little earlier tonight so I hope more of you are on line.

You likely have bad solder joints, they often occur on the surface mounted resistors, and sometimes on the display tube itself. Re-soldering them will fix the problem.
There's a DIY somewhere floating around telling you how to remove the bezel. I tried removing it but I felt like I was going to break it lol, it's a bitch to pull out. Try using a putty knife or a flathead.
Interesting, this probably won't help you any... But my clock dims when I turn on the headlights probably because of the current the lights are sucking...
Honestly bro, you'd just have to pull it out and take a look at it. My best guess, as others have said before, would be either a loose wire or bad solder joint.
But as the old saying goes, learn by doing it.
Just be gentle when pulling the bezel out. You have to be firm, but not forceful. I took the IP out of my old 94 tons of times, and it never broke. I know it's not the same model, but they're made of similar materials.
You're not allowed to post THREE threads on the same issue. Merged.
