3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have a 1996 camry with a 2.2L 5sfe. I am getting conflicting info on kits. Some say model specific and some list multiple( camry,mr2,rav4). Is a kit universal? Any I'd to would be great. My camry either snapped the belt or lost the tensioner. Any kit recommendations?
I'm looking for the following:
timing belt
water pump with gasket
timing belt tensioner
timing belt idler
timing belt tensioner spring
valve cover gasket set
spark plug tube seals
accessory drive belts
thermostat
thermostat gasket
crankshaft seal
camshaft seal
oil pump seal
oil pump o ring
Cam cover gaskets

Yea, I agree with Mister Perkins. If you are planning on keeping this car, and want to ensure reliability, Go with Toyota parts. You really don't want to "cheap out" on your cars engine. In fact, Toyota parts are sometimes less money than aftermarket, that's what I have found at least. Even if the Toyota parts cost much more, you will be assured that the quality is in it and you will maintain the reliability. There have been some very frustrating situations discussed on this forum as a result of using aftermarket parts.

I agree, go with all OEM parts (with online dealer discounts reaching 30% off MSRP) or get a very similar kit only aftermarket brands (no Toyota logos on parts) often much lower as most parts are same as OEM, same manufacturers - look for them on ebay.

This kit is on Ebay and it is OEM stuff made by Aisin.
It's the one I am going to buy when I change my belts/pump. I agree with the previous posters who recommend going with OEM parts unless you are planning on selling the car soon.
Nice info guys! I want to do this type of job, but I'm hesitant i will just make things worse. Anyone know some reliable mechanic in north new jersey for a timing belt job?

Buy yourself a Haynes service manual and dig in. It's relatively easy, don't be afraid to get dirty!

no. I don't trust any of them. eventually had to do this myself to get things done right
as above, DIY and get some dirt under your nails ... that of course if you have a garage ... if not then I hope the weather stays clear and warm at your place ... which is unlikely ... we have an oncoming blizzard
to tell the truth. I used a local shop around me 2 times (cheap aftermarket parts didn't pay off first time). nothing leaks, all works ... but it wasn't a perfect job, so I don't recommend them. they are sloppy. Most other shops around here are so shady I wouldn't trust most places with a tire rotation ... and on top of all most of them just thinks of raping your wallet

Right now I'm not sure if I can swing Toyota parts. I found this one but it says it's for a mr2 with a 5sfe. Will this work? What's the difference between mr2 kits and camry kits?

Check out this kit on ebay, it fits 1992 to 2001 Camry with the 5S-FE engine. This will have everything you need for the timing belt/waterpump service. A great price too! These components are AISIN Japan, except the timing belt which is made in USA. They are what you get from Toyota, (except the belt) with the Toyota emblem removed. These parts will have the same quality as if you bought them from Toyota, except the price is about 1/2 the cost!
double price, all OEM suppliers as well and you get cam and crank seal, water pump with housing (Aisin), gaskets and o-rings, idler (Koyo), tensioner (Koyo), thermostat (Kuzeh would be OEM but Motorad wasn't called same as OEM by a fellow TN member) and both OEM drive belts (Bando).
Out of the 2 aisin kits what's the difference between the tkt002 and tkt003? I must be missing something. Maybe I'll do an aisen kit and get the rest from toyota (Gary)
That is what I did.
