Battery Terminal Protector ( red grease)

Does anyone know if the red grease that repair shops spray on your battery terminals is call Di-Electric Grease ? Do you know if you should spray it on the battery terminals before you attach the battery connectors ? I saw some comments where some people say that it is a non-conductor and should never come between the connector and the battery terminals. They mention that you should spray it on the connection after the connector is connected to the battery.

I see another product called Battery Terminal Protector. Maybe this is the red grease.

Reading product descriptions and ing are your friends. I wouldn't put di-electric grease on battery terminals. I'd clean them as well as you can... both posts and terminals (there may be a product for that) and connect them without any product. Then after you're done... hit it with a protectant. Note that a protestant is only used to make sure that no corrosion occurs, IIRC.

Thanks LynchburgCSI. I think some people mistakenly refer to di-electric grease when referring to "Battery Terminal Protector Grease". This just misleads people. I also see that the Haynes manual sugguests using petrolum jelly on the battery posts but that can't be any good. Anything between the connecting surfaces would be just as bad as a layer of corrosion between them. I think. I agree with you. thanks again.

Petroleum jelly works REALLY well and a non-conductive protectant. That yellow CRC protectant doesn't conduct electricity either. And that's a GOOD THING. You don't want to leave a positive terminal exposed where anything could possibly connect it to ground. Neither of those should be put BETWEEN electrical connections.... just ON them to protect them from the environment. Just wanted to clarify.

Would these non-conductive protectants cause resistance to jumper cables ? They would come between the connection.

I had no Idea that was part of the religion!

They sure would. Glad you brought that up actually. I keep a rag in my car for checking the oil and other stuff. Some like to keep it in the engine bay. I think that ought to solve that issue.

The claws in the jumper cable clamp will bite through the layer of grease or any corrosion into the metal. If corrosion layer is thick, squeeze and wiggle the clamp.

The grease prevents moisture from touching the metal surface, which can lead to corrosion. If battery is leaking, then the grease will not help.

That's all I've been using for years now. I've tried a few others that are sold at the auto supply stores, some work as well, but cost a lot more, so why use 'em??? Those felt doughnut thingy's don't do shit!
