Canada Problems with reverse gear

Hi all,

I'm having issues with my '94 Camry. Yesterday I get into the car and put it into reverse and it doesn't move. I give it a little gas and it doesn't move. I give it a lot of gas....like around 4000rpm and it finally backs up but very slowly. I drive around for a while and it seems to be shifting fine going forward. I park and shift again into reverse and have the same issue. I check the fluids and they seem fine.

Tonight I start the car up to move it out onto the street and it seems to reverse just fine...like yesterday didn't happen. Any ideas?

J

ouch. That's not good. my first instinct is that it Sounds like your Direct clutch is starting to slip. Could have just circulated a little dirt between the clutch after this happened to allow it to go in reverse the following time. I would also check around the bottom of the transmission to make sure that it is not leaking out the bottom. If it is, your torque converter seal could be seeping. Did you happen to check the condition of the fluid? Checking for burnt / discolored ATF fluid.

I had the same problem on my '91 Camry. When I first got the car it had 79,000 miles on it. The transmission fluid was black as coal. So I changed the fluid via the drain plug and drove the car a few hundred miles then drained and refilled again, I did this several times until the fluid was red. Then I dropped the pan and replaced the filter and put fresh fluid in. It was fine for one year and then I lost reverse. I also lost all coast, no engine braking. I had to have the transmission rebuilt and now it is 3 1/2 years later and no problems..

The best advice you could get is that if you are not experienced in diagnosing a transmission, or repairing a transmission to take it to a reputable transmission shop and have them repair it.
