3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
long story short, the exhaust system on my 92 se v6 is a hack job. small pipe going into big pipe into more small pipe, the cat is from a pontiac gto because it didnt have one when i got it. i searched the forums and it seems like the magnaflow y-pipe w/ converter seems to be a good choice, but i cant seem to find much on the cat-back system. i found this system on amazon:
ive used obx stuff before and i know its not great, but its got to be better than what i have. i think this is a 2.5" system, because they also have a listing for a 3" systems that specifies it is 3".
im a technician and spend alot of time underneath cars on lifts, and it seems like i recall the gen 3 and gen 4 exhaust systems to be pretty similar. im hoping someone can help clarify if this will work, with minor modifications.
The exhaust systems are very similar. In order for me to get the trd exhaust to fit my gen 3, I had to get a resonator from a gen 4 in order for it to fit. The main differences were the hangers. I fabricated the hangers to make it fit the rubber mounts on the exhaust

Any competent installer should be able to put that system on a 3rd gen. As said above, it's mostly just the hangers that are different. WARNING: The 92-93 V6 Camry is a different V6 from the 94-01 V6. Be careful when you start looking into y-pipes. The headers don't need to be touched.

Whoooooa there. The these aren't Z block engines. They're MZ and VZ. 92-93 is the 3VZ-FE and the 94-01 is the 1MZ-FE. I hope you were just abbreviating differently.

megan makes good stuff, like how it sounds, dont like the dual tip though. i have a question (sorry dont mean to thread jack) but im doing something similar ..... not really im making my own exhaust system but can the cat be deleted and the o2 tricked? so that codes dont pop up or engine light turns on? my cat is rusted through so ive decided to build a entire new exhaust. thanks...
I don't think removing the cat will really affect the post-cat O2 sensor. All the cat does is convert harmful gasses to safer ones + water. The O2 sensor just looks for trace amounts of unburnt fuel per volume of gas, IIRC.

so if i have a good strong running engine that isnt burning oil or not burning gas, it should be fine if i remove the cat?
Do some research on exactly what a cat does. Also look into what an O2 sensor does.

All gen4 and gen1 solara catbacks will fit the gen3. The hangers in the back have to be reworked to fit. The obx headers don't fit the 3vz engine iirc without modification. Removing the cat won't effect anything but the ecu. You'll have to put a defouler to trick it.
