3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
Hey ya'll, it's been awhile since i've been in the forums. As a quick reminder I have a I4 98 Camry. So my muffler crapped out on me yesterday, so gonna get it replaced soon.
I'm looking to have a QUIET muffler, I don't care much for growling and purring on this car since I can get my fix from my other car. I don't care much for performance gains neither, I'm looking strictly for a better quality muffler than what a hole-in-the-wall muffler shop will install for me (most likely aluminum) in my daily driver.
I was wondering if any of you have a magnaflow muffler with stock cat installed? I was looking at this one
Magnaflows are of great quality and S/S and can't beat the price, however not sure how much louder this muffler will be from OEM. Yes, I understand that if I want the quietness of an OEM muffler to simply buy another OEM one, however my question is for this Magnaflow for any smart alecs .

It's still going to be louder than stock. Any muffler in the same class as Magnaflow will be louder than stock. Those no-name mufflers you find at small muffler shops are as close to OEM quiet as you'll get without getting an OEM muffler.

You may have trouble installing that one, typically you install a resonator under the car and the muffler installs attached tot he tip, there isnt too much room to play around under the Camry chassis and that magnaflow looks like what youd install under a truck. The amount of piping after the muffler makes a difference in overall sound and some mufflers will be really really loud with less than a few feet of pipe at both ends. Go with a vibrant muffler or a good quality OEM type, Magnaflows are usually pretty loud...

You have a gen 3 though, so possibly different results? So upon further inspection i have found that my muffler is perfectly fine, the mid pipe however rusted off its flange on the inlet side of the muffler.
Rather than to have the muffler shop fix that and possibly another few spots closer to the resonator, i'm going to replace the entire midpipe and resonator. I'm going to check ebay and amazon, the pipes are probably $100 or so

gen3 or gen4, same engine. The only real difference would be the ignition system. Distributor vs, coil pack. Also, I'm in California, so my car has 2 catalytic converters. That would diminish the sound quite a bit. Even so, it's still somewhat loud with this muffler.
Face the facts. It's an aftermarket "performance" muffler. It is NOT going to be OEM quite, which is what I thought you were looking for.

If your Camry exhaust is all original, the complete exhaust system is stainless steel, except for the flanges that join the pipes and components together. The best way to fix this is to go to a muffler shop and have them cut out the rusty flanges and patch in a small section of stainless exhaust pipe and have it welded in. If you replace any part of your exhaust system with aluminized steel pipe or muffler, you will be replacing those sections over and over.

Went to the muffler shop close to my house, $70 for the replacement resonator and pipe. Now I can enjoy hearing nothing from my car, except for my concert quality car audio .
Thanks everyone for you input ...

i know this thread kind of ended, and this is a slightly different question than whaty was originally being discussed but ive been wantin to do a new exhaust set up. i wanna remove resonator and do a dual exhaust. yes its the I4 but i think itd be cool. any suggestions? maybe even some rude remarks?

Get a muffler with dual tips. Trying to do a somewhat dual exhaust ( y pipe after cat) will sound like a lawnmower in distress.
But straight pipe after the cat with just a muffler shouldn't sound horrible. Delete the air intake resonator and throw a cone filter on the end of the intake pipe and that'll make it sound good for only 25$.
But theres no way to make it sound like a v8, i think thats what your trying to ask.
I have the TRD axle back exhaust and it's just barely louder than OEM when I keep the RPMs under 2k. It only sounds louder than stock around 2.5k and up.
