abs issues

hello

I have a 97 Camry xle v6 and i have had issues with my abs system as of late. The abs / trac off light comes on sporadically. Sometimes the slippery light lights up as well. The brake pedal feels spongy sometimes and rigid other times If i press on the brake pedal or ride it to long when i try to stop, it makes a noise which can be squeaky, grinding, or "robotic sometimes” Seems like as though the noise originates from the front brakes. Toyota said it was the speed sensor, which was replaced by my mechanic. BTW my mechanic used a used sensor. The issue changed to the point where the abs light now takes a bit longer to come on now rather than right away.

When I restart the car, the lights clear off and come back on when I try to brake

Would be this be an issue with the brake master cylinder, abs tone ring (was made aware that it is broken), the abs unit itself, or the used sensor? The Abs gave a code 32.

I appreciate all the help. Thank you.

DTC No. 32 is for the left front speed sensor (on Denso made ABS module with Traction control).

manual offers at least 2 easy checks:

a) resistance check on sensor terminals

Front:
PREPARATION:
(a) Remove the front fender liner.
(b) Disconnect the speed sensor connector.
CHECK:
Measure resistance between terminals 1 and 2 of speed sensor
connector.
OK:
Resistance: 0.6 – 2.5K ohm
CHECK:
Measure resistance between terminals 1 and 2 of speed sensor
connector and body ground.
OK:
Resistance: 1M ohm or higher

b) ABS ECU speed sensor test mode

2. SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL
(a) Check the speed sensor signal.
(1) Turn the ignition switch OFF.
(2) Using SST, connect terminals Ts and E1 of DLC1.
SST 09843 – 18020
(3) Start the engine.
(4) Check that the ABS warning light blinks.
HINT:
If the ABS warning light does not blink, inspect the ABS warning
light circuit (See page DI–529).
(5) Drive vehicle straight forward.
HINT:
Drive vehicle faster than 45 km/h (28 mph) for several seconds.
(6) Stop the vehicle.
(7) Using SST, connect terminals Tc and E1 of DLC1.
SST 09843 – 18020
(8) Read the number of blinks of the ABS warning light.
HINT:
See the list of DTC shown on the next page.
If every sensor is normal, a normal code is output (A cycle
of 0.25 sec. ON and 0.25 sec. OFF is repeated).
If 2 or more malfunctions are indicated at the same time,
the lowest numbered code will be displayed 1st.
(9) After doing the check, disconnect the SST from terminals
Ts and E1, Tc and E1 of DLC1, and turn ignition
switch OFF.

DTC of speed sensor check function:
Code No. Diagnosis Trouble Area

71 Low output voltage of right front speed sensor
 Right front speed sensor
 Sensor installation
 Right front speed sensor rotor

72 Low output voltage of left front speed sensor
 Left front speed sensor
 Sensor installation
 Left front speed sensor rotor

73 Low output voltage of right rear speed sensor
 Right rear speed sensor
 Sensor installation
 Right rear speed sensor rotor

74 Low output voltage of left rear speed sensor
 Left rear speed sensor
 Sensor installation
 Left rear speed sensor rotor

75
Abnormal change in output voltage of right front speed sensor
 Right front speed sensor rotor

76
Abnormal change in output voltage of left front speed
sensor
 Left front speed sensor rotor

77
Abnormal change in output voltage of right rear speed
sensor
 Right rear speed sensor rotor

78 Abnormal change in output voltage of left rear speed sensor
 Left rear speed sensor rotor

hope it helps.
