3rd Generation Rear Deck Vents for Subwoofers

Hey everyone, I'm new to posting but been reading and researching on here for a bit. I've got a '92 LE V6, and i installed my sub woofer box from my old 4runner, and than tried my box from my '85 Celica. I've noticed that the sound is greatly muffled by being in the trunk as compared to open cabin/trunk. I run two Kicker 8" L5's powered by a 600 watt amp.

I have read that removing the rear speakers help with this, but I was wondering if anyone has cut the holes in the rear deck to allow the bass to filter to the cabin, and allows keeping the rear speakers?

Thanks

There's the problem. Those are too small, and can't move enough air in the huge trunk of these cars. You can mount one of those subs right into the rear deck, and get much better bass response that way, or just upgrade to at least a 10" sub/box combo. I'm running a 10" Pioneer shallow mount sub/box with a 1000W amp. I have clean/clear bass without taking up too much space.

i cut holes and installed ports in the rear deck of my 92. i dont remember the exact size, but im guessing it had to be at least 3in. pipe. if you want my honest opinion, i dont think it made a ton of difference. what did make a huge difference was letting the rear seats down. massive increase in bass, but then you re showing what youve got, and people cant ride in the back.

Well I'm trying to not spend anymore money, as I'm saving for school.
I found that just having the smaller rear fold-down seat open gave
me the desired bass, but is a constant pain having to open and close
every time i park outside.

Question to this, I used the same set-up in my '91 4runner which I'm assuming has equal or more air than the Camry. I found the bass extremely satisfying, with response and accuracy. What about the Camry makes such a drastic change?

The rear seats are thick foam that muffles the bass wave.

okay thank you twincannon26, sorry I was replying when you posted.
When you used the vents with the seats up, did you notice the rear
speakers having better quality sound because the pressure from the
subs wasn't acting upon them as much?

to be honest i cant really recall. back then i was more concerned with how much bass i could make (young and stupid). But, your statement about less pressure on the rear 6x9s does make sense to me.

If you move your amp, to be not visible, you can leave the rear seats down. That's what I do. No one knows I have a hard hitting Rockford Fosgate system until it hits. :pimp:

acctually, its all about cone area. if you were have the same exact line of subs... and compared 2 8"s to a single 10... the 8's would be louder. simply because they have more surface area on the cones. (thus moving more air than the single 10) im about to put a 1750w rms 18" beast in my wagon.

Well, yes that's true. however, the OP is running the 2 8's on a 600W amp. That's only 300W max each. That's just not enough power to produce the required sound pressure to hear/feel the bass without folding the rear seat down. My rear 6x9's are 350W max each, and are enough to vibrate the mirrors without the sub. Yes, 2 8's have more surface area than a single 10 and could more more air. However, if the 10 is 1000W max(like mine), the 10 can produce more sound pressure then the 2 8's at 300W each.

I also used to run my 2 12"s with the back seats down....and with a black sub box it looked like a factory cover in the trunk....and boy did they sound nice...

I'' be running (3) 10's and 3500 watts, You could run 2 8" subs on 600 watts and it sound decent, where is the enclosure placed? sealed or ported enclosure? Right now subs and port to the back sound decent but for comps I'll be doing subs and port forward, with the box all the way to the back of the trunk

I just built a new box. .73 ft³ for each sub, sealed, rear facing, and the box fits under the rear deck, I'll throw that in and see how that sounds.

Thanks for the input

Question though,
I'm already experiencing a large draw on the altenator with just 600w.
To run more power have you guys done upgrades like the Big 3, or H.O alts?
