Assuming a '98 1MZ auto here. All it's going to do is add noise. People have done some dynos, and there's no gain, IIRC. Note that the factory intake is already a cold air intake (CAI). Switching to a short ram intake (SRI) is just going to raise your intake air temps.

first off, avoid such large font. its annoying to read. seccond, if your going to get an intake teh injen is a pretty good one to get. you can find extentions that allow you to convert to a CAI (if you cant just make one your self) and its got a descent quality filter with it. like Lynch said, it will prove no gains but sounds AMAZING on the v6.

OBX y-pipe and headers. 5-speed swap. Supercharger. Search around... there's good info on modding the 1mz-fe.

3 inch cold air intake on a 1mz is stupid loud at WOT lol it make heads turn!!! damn i need to put up a sound clip of it !
also if you want free power: clean your intake plenum and egr system, relocate the knock sensors. this can give you up to 15 hp depending on the condition the plenum/egr was
My intake is loud when I turn the engine over for a minute or two and then goes quiet. It makes that little air-sucking noise. After the car is warmed up, it's gone.
It's pretty loud though after you punch it over 4500rpm. I've noticed 2mpg gain after I installed the intake though.
even if theres no power gain would there be more response from the throttle since more air goes in ?
It's negligible. You'd get more from cleaning the TB.

Yeah, sounds like a mini-wastegate or something letting the excess air out on upshifts with a 5-speed manual. Only when cold. It's probably from the IAC valve metering more air for cold start enrichment.
Mine is loud since it's right behind me, near the MR2's lower side engine compartment vent.
Either my MAF doesn't like it or my MAF is on its way out. I've registered between +14-25% LTFTs only at idle because the MAF reports around 2.6-2.9 g/s, when clearly the engine is ingesting more as the AFR sensors are readjusting the trims. I put in a spacer in front of the MAF and it improved a tad, though not much, so I'm putting it on my MAF going bad. I've already cleaned it about 500 times. It's as clean as can be. That or my MAF doesn't like the ported heads and the extra volume they flow. It's a really strange issue. I've logged it a few times and can't draw any conclusions. I'll try out another MAF and see what happens.
