1993 5SFE - will timing belt failure damage engine?

1993 Camry LE 4 cyl auto, 354k km.

I've heard you need to replace the timing belt on this engine before it goes, because if it does break in operation it could/will damage the engine. (The Haynes manual is *very* clear that changing the timing belt is expert territory and damage will result if you screw it up.)

Could someone please confirm?

Thanks,
ND

no, it won't break the engine. 5s-fe is a non-interference engine, you won't bend valves if that happens while driving.

if you have a garage then you could attempt changing it yourself, it takes about 8 hours the first time (if you never did that before) when you tackle the water pump and crank & cam seals, tensioner (plus spring) and idler pulley as well.

search forum or check Camry FAQ sticky on top, there is a few DIY's on that.

354k kilometers = 219.965402k miles. Go ahead and change it if it's in your budget. But yes, all of the camry engines from 92-01 are non interference.

As said, 5SFE is a non-interference engine. The only danger is stalling in front of a big rig truck! Not too safe.

Also, it helps to rig up the cam/crank pulley holder tools in the following thread from Home Depot parts. And get other necessary tools from Harbor Freight when on sale if you don't have them. For example, various torque wrenches.
