Indicator lights ON with a strange combination

Hi,

My 2000 Camry LE, has suddenly started showing the following symptoms. Not sure what needs to be done. If I take it to a dealer what should I expect?

1. When the car is started, the Engine Check light is ON. The only other light ON is the parking gear indicator ( the green P).

2. As soon as I press the brake pedal to change the gear, the “Replace Bulb” indicator comes ON and stays ON. I checked the front and rear lights, indicator/ break lights and they are working fine.

3. Once I put the car in the Drive gear, I don’t seen any gear lights (P, R, D, 2) on the panel.

4. The reverse gear indicator ( R ) comes ON, every time the brake pedal is pushed.

Thanks,

MG.

You have a taillight out.. or your taillight harness plugs are messed up

your NSS needs cleaned or repaired. thats why your Light Tree isn't showing the proper gears

NSS Repair
DIY: Neutral Safety Switch Cleaning

As far as your Check engine light coming on .. Its hard to tell what the deal is there. Maybe bring it to autozone and have them check for codes.

Hope that helps.

I am not sure what you mean by 'bring it to autozone'.

Autozone can run a diagnostic on your car and tell you what code(s) you are getting. If you have an OBDII Scan tool, you can pull them yourself

Edit:

Forgot to mention they do it for free

OK so it seems that you think that you have a specific combo of lights that are all caused by one thing. That's not that case.

1.The check engine light is one because the computer has detected a problem. Its probably emmissions related. Take it to AutoZone and they will tell you the code number. Don't buy anything from them and report back the code to us.

2.The taillight indicator likes to turn on if a bulb is a little loose in the connector/ if a bulb is about to burn out. I would forget about it and just check every few weeks to make sure you don't have a bulb burned out. Chances are a bulb is on the verge of going out and after you replace it the dash indicator will stop illuminating. The dash indicator only tells you if a Brake Light bulb is out. Not reverse, license plate or turn signal.

3. Thats supposed to be that way. The D light should be the only one illuminated during the day if your in D.

4. Are you talking about the R indicator on the dash or on the console by the shifter?

Hope that cleared things up a bit.

"4. The reverse gear indicator ( R ) comes ON, every time the brake pedal is pushed."

This leads me to believe you have a common problem. The loom of wires inside the trunk by the driver's side trunk hinge has a tendency to frey and break from all the years the trunk is constantly opened and closed. The wiring leading to the brake lights and the reverse lights may both be freyed and the metal strands are touching each other. Open up that loom of wires and look for freyed or broken wires. Fix what you find.

As others have stated above, the check engine light is a separate issue. Get the code(s) read for free at Autozone and report then back here.

Mike
