92 camry overheating

Plese help me.
What are all the things that can make a 92 camry overheat within a 2 mile drive?
I watched for my radiator water to circulate, which it didn't, so I put in a new dealer thermostat and still it overheats.
After reading stuff off the internet, will a heater control valve make a car overheat? If so how can I fix it?
Another thing, about two months ago my heater stoped working. Only cool or cold air, depending how cold it was outside, would blow into the passenger compartment. My air-conditioner still works great.
Any advice will be appreciated, Thank you.

water pump, remove the highest hose and start the car it should start shoot water like a fire hose, prolly wount and that means the water pump not working

I second water pump, but dont suggest the method above

The thermostat was installed the correct direction right? IIRC, it can go in two ways, but only one is right. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Well it can't go in backwards, but you can have the jiggle valve in the wrong position for sure
