Rear Deck Noise

Howdy again all,

Did a couple of google searches as well as a few forum searches on my problem before hand. Just wanted to make it clear before I get trolled or flamed.

My 98 camry has always had this rattling noise in the rear deck. I have (what I believe to be) aftermarket Pioneer 6x9s. I had a tolerable rattle, but now that I installed a single Pioneer 12" sub in the trunk, the rattling is SO much worse. I have read it could be retaining screws, plastic clips, busted sub, bad sub box, and even might be the license plate, tire well, or spare tire retaining rod.

Well, I know it isn't the sub because the rattle was pre-existing. I know it isn't the License plate - because I don't have one... I kid, but I know it isn't the license plate. The spare tire rod is tight and the tire well has nothing that could cause vibrations from what I can tell. The posts and google searches I attempted are dated so far back that the pictures have fallen off of servers or the information is convoluted.

I did get this one nice search but he was talking about 'four holes of which three we could see in the pic' but I did not see what he was talking about. I read the entire post, looked at all the pictures, and still was at a loss.

I do not want to buy this expensive sounding material that supposedly dampens rattle. This guy said it worked by putting 2-sided tape on the flat surface of the deck and then pounding the cover back in place. My thing is, I don't know if this applies to my car and if I should put some on the clips that hold the cover on.

Any help appreciated.

Oh, just to say, I have Pioneer 5 3/4" in my front doors and Pioneer head unit... love my Pioneers.

Have a helper listen to the source of the noise. Speaker or strut mounts or loose rear deck material, for example. Is the spare tire tightened down?

yes, but toyota says upper strut mounts are not dangerous unless top of shock actually moves around and for that to happen rubber would be totally gone which would be very unlikely...I have been driving camry with noise for several years with no problem, just noise. if strut mounts, about $100 or so at o'reillys, az etc.
